anyone have a friend who has done this? I have a friend that wants to do this, using k5 pink to build a crew cab......for less registration fees...I wouldn't do it but has anyone heard of this and knows if it could work?

Hold on while I make my list of friends that have done this. While Im at it would you like a list of friends that have killed somebody and how they disposed of the body.:haha:

see now this is kinda a grey area. sorta. is he putting a crew cab on a k-5 frame? i have personally put a crew cab on to a k20 standered cab frame and used the k20 vin tag on the crew cab body so all numbers would match frame and cab. and have took a crew cab long bed c20 and turned it in to a k30 crew long. so if hes simple just changing out the cabs hes ok, but if hes putting a k5 tag on to a true k30 frame and cab, hes in no no territory. most police officers have the capablites to pull up or decode the vin tag and reg. to see what the reg. was for orgenaly. i have been pulled over twice in my k20 crew and had the vin tag checked, as well as the frame, and they always come back and ask me how come my truck has to extra doors then when it came from the factory, i simple tell them that the origanal cab rotted out and i bought this one at a scrap yard because i needed more room for the kids. i usally get a "hum hum" from them and they let me go with a warning about my head lights being to tall. but thats anther story.

simple put if hes doing a cab swop hes more then likely ok but if hes titleing a k30 or a k20 hes in deep dog poop when they figure it out, more then likely a few thousand dollars in court fees, tickets, and so on, and to say the lease a D.O.T. inspection too, and some times they make u pay for those depending on the state ur in.

i dont think so. see thats that grey area, post of the city cops wouldnt know the difference but a more rual cop would be more in cline to check a few things. anther thing is the wheels if its eight lug then then its more in cline to be a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton. these r things i would notice, and if the reg. says k5 im going to start asking questions, in the thoughs that the truck might be stolen, first of all. now if its a k5 with 8s under it and is lifted, big tires im thinking mods, but a k5.

now a police officer isnt goint to tell u this strait up but if the reg matches the the cab ur fine, use commen sence if its a crew it needs to be pick up reg (k10 - k30), not a k5. if its a k5 with a crew on it, witch has been done before on here, use a k5 - k30 tag.

basicly if the fames an 1980 or older it doesnt matter as long as ur in the rust belt, we will never find the vin stamping in the rust as he-ll frame as long as its not a southern truck, but if u do use a 1981 and up frame try and keep the cab tag with the frame. sheet metal changes, stamped steel frames with stamped vins r not as ease to to change. olders is better in this case.

oh and by the way u can buy o.e.m. rivets for ur vin tag on line, but i didnt tell u that. ssssssuuuuussshhhh

what about cutting the frame serial off one and welding it to the other...it'd have to be a clean job, but I'm sure it could be done.......full pen weld, flap wheel, sand blast, paint...trying to find my pink right now to see exactly what it says on it

It is a FEDERAL CRIME to tamper with the VIN plate. Now if you have the title to BOTH vehicles and they are BOTH in your name you can legally swap some stuff around and have the CHP verify the swap and be good BUT you cannot be mixing different body types so in your case this would not be legal.

My title says that my k5 is a k10 1/2 ton suv. I told them it isn't a k10 and they shrugged it off.

You sure it doesn't say V10? I know on my registration it says V10 because of the body change and the OBS used the R/V designation starting in 1988.

if u get really unlucky and ur truck was towed to a dot inspection shop, they have hand held X-rays that can tell if u have done any welding like that, but unless ur running drugs for one country to anther then ur perty much ok and thats not going to happen. unless ur really un lucky.

the morral of the story make sure the two important tags match the vin tag on the cab to the paper work and and the frame to the vin. and u'll never have any werries.

About the only thing an unsuspecting CHP officer is going to notice is the passenger car plate on a one ton crew cab...If he uses a 1/2 ton truck and gets a commercial plate, it might not be noticed, but a passenger car plate will throw the red flag everytime...Then again the reason the blazer registration is so cheap is because there is no wieght fee added because its a passenger vehicle.

His is an 84 K5...

In Maryland cops can tell what a vehicle is registered as by the letter/number combo and order on the tags right down to the year, weight and engine size. I know this because when my 85 Olds died I slapped the tags on my 72 Skylark to finish up a behind sched job and intended to tag the Buick after I got paid....well I never made it that far...the officer was cool,he told me he knew I switched tags because of the year difference but since both cars were mine and both insured he didn't slam me with about 9 high dollar tickets. There are registrations and tags for modified/combo'd vehicles now. The cop also told me that since 9/11 ANY kind of misdirection concerning vehicles or IDs can land you in a room with some really agitated agents who want to know why you're lying to the government!

I have toyed with the idea of using my 73 Vin on Horton (which is an 87 pickup) but so heavily modifed you can't tell.

There are rules and regs to this, but I could legally do it.

Although if you got pulled over in a crew cab and the title said K5 (Idaho a pickup says pickup and a blazer says utility vehicle) I think it might warrant unwanted attention

also the gvw of the blazer is brob less than the crewcab weight. so overweight ticket could be had with no way out of it.

also doing this = way to much legal problems in the end.

i my self use the k30 stuff for emissions exempt in my state. but i also start with 1 ton trucks.
