Bumper build

It is going to be similar in style to my 4x4 Iron front bumper but lighter which is a good thing.

There is nothing light about this bumper.

Stout and light just don't mix together very well. I'm going to try and weigh this thing a piece at a time and come close to the final weight when done. IIRC Warn's website says the winch weighs 80 lbs.

Yeah, but you should feel my front bumper. It is the same shape but boxed a lot larger and very thick. Even without the winch in it, one person can't lift it. Yours will be stout, but not as boxy as mine and that is better.

That bumper is going to be sweet. Nice work. Can you build me one before Blazerfest? Come on it's only like 4 days from now. Plenty of time. Lol.

I'm curious as to what your plans are in regards to the finish? Will you paint it, powdercoat, line-x etc...

It will be pained onyx black with a satin clear coat like my rear bumper.

Ok guys, i am almost finished with this bumper. I just couldn't wait until tomorrow to add a pic so i took one in the dark this evening. I will take another tomorrow in the daylight but for now i "fixed" the photo enough to view it.

EDIT: New pic in the daylight and also another side view pic. I now have the winch mounted but i can't get a pic until sunday as i'm leaving for Blazerfest in the morning.

I wrestled with the idea of powder coating mine but ended up with a rattle can paint job on mine. I used Rust-Oleum in the textured black. It is a kind of crinkle finish, hides boo boos well, and is rough so standing on it isn't slippery. Whenever I get back from a run, I just break out the can and throw a little more paint on the scrapes to make it look good as new. What kind of paint are you going with on yours, rattle can, auto paint, or powder?

My buddy paints it for me with automotive paint. He will use filler to fill any voids and make it look purdy for me.

Looks good Scott! :waytogo:

I can't tell from those photos, but is there anything on the back side to tie those bumper ends back to the frame for support? That beveled section could create a lot of leverage against the frame if you were to ever catch a corner on an obstacle (or Jeep! :D)..... A simple triangulated bar on each side could be a nice final touch before sending it off to paint.

IF you stood the winch upright, how much do you think it would force out the bumper? I really like your design. I'm just wondering if I turned my winch on it's side if it would be more susceptible to water getting into the solenoids across the top.

I like it, looks great. Of course I am partial to the bar I added to mine for lights and to protect the top of the winch, but your winch is pretty hidden too. A bar similar to mine that went from one side of the angled in end to the other would give it a little extra strength in case you take a hit on the angled part. I can't wait to see it painted, good job.

Greg, right now there isn't any support in the area you're talking about but it is in my plan to do so. The factory bumper utilized the same support so i've already got a template for what i'm going to build to take the place of the cheap plate triangulation. I'm going to make the support tube/bar bolt to the frame and the bumper to make bumper removal easier should i need to remove it myself.

runamok151...If you mean mounting the winch withe the feet down the bumper face wouldn't have to move forward at all BUT you would have to weld a plate to the top of the bumper tube. Is your winch an integrate solenoid controller? If not you can mount the controller anywhere you wish (i'm going to mount mine under the hood). The winch itself is pretty much water tight although Warn does say if the winch gets submerged in water to run the winch until the motor is warm to the touch to make sure it burns off any moisture within the motor/housing.

yep, mines integrated, the xd9000i. keep going, you're giving me ideas. i might have to get a template for the tabs too.

Scott,

I'm assuming you were at BlazerFest this weekend?

Any wheeling action, or pics?

:usaflag:

Yes i was at Blazerfest this weekend. I only have a couple pics, here they are. The last pic is the carnage of my passenger side step, the log won that round.

Hey, you snapped a picture of my bottled water. :) I posted some more in the regional forum and have some lame videos coming soon.

I got to see the bumper in person. Pretty freakin nice welding and fitment. And even without extra bracing, I wouldn't be too worried about it bending anytime soon.

Not much been happening with this bumper but here are two more pics. The first is showing how the bumper currently looks and the second pic shows how i mounted my license plate. The license plate is mounted on the bumper in the first pic but flipped up (i used a flip up camaro license plate bracket just like my rear bumper).
