I'm leaning toward the blazen off road swing down style with jerry can mounts and hi-lift mount. Nothing says Urban Assault Vehicle like that bumper. I'd like to hear from people who have that style to see if its not ideal or any other feedback before I make the purchase.

Thanks

I'm doing my own version of a swing down....

While the swing down style is probably stronger than a swing away style the swing down is going to be alot harder to lift back into position since you will have the weight of the tire, jerry can, hi-lift AND the weight of the carrier itself.

Ive been debating about this too and thought that a little cheap atv winch on a pulley system would just be the bee's knees!

While that is a very good idea, IMO it just adds more weight and complexity to an already heavy vehicle.

Someone else on here is doing just that, i think it was Colby.

I've always thought a swing down would just get in the way for everyday use. Of course, I'm not planning on ever going any bigger than 35s, maybe only 33s. If I was going a lot bigger, making a strong enough swing away might be kinda hard...

the reason I'm going with a swing-down is the 38 spare... I think it's just too much weight for a swing open.... mine will basically be the spare and a small stinger behind, that it mounts to pivoting down... no jerry can, hi-lift weight, etc on mine...

I like my DIY4X tire carrier, but I would change to a swing down if I had to do it over again. One with the tire mounted toward the vehicle.

In my case if I get a flat I get the privilege of lifting a 37" Krawler up to chest high and trying to line the bolt holes up with the studs. On a swing down you can roll the tire and lean it down onto the studs. When removing take the lugs off, tip it up on edge and roll it where you need it. On a swing out you pull it off, back up, set it down, hopefully without it rolling away, or dropping it, or hurting yourself in the process.

Another thing I would do differently is mount the tire to the driver's side so you get better vision out of the rear view mirror. Mine is mounted near the center and blocks a lot of my vision. A come a long or hand winch on a boat could be used to raise and lower the tire carrier or even a spring like on some utiility trailer gates.
