C.B. noise Update (its Still there)

<font color=red>So if you're not supposed to coil up all that coax what the hell do you do with it? I've got my CB in the dash above the radio and two 4' whips mounted on my mirrors. The end result is about 10' more coax than I need so I coiled it up and zip tied it under the dash. I don't have any noise problem and my range seems to be about 3 miles in town and plenty of range and signal off-road. Is having all this coax coiled up going to damage anything?

Your problem is not with your CB at all. It is with your ignition system.

First, start by disconnecting your hi-po ignition if you can. Start up and see what happens. If that does it, maybe you don't have your ignition box case grounded well enough. Other things that could whack the CB:

- Bad heater blower motor (try this one!)
- Faulty plug wires sparking to headers, etc
- Stereo Amplifier that isn't grounded properly
- Cheap CB

Is the noise so bad that you can't squelch it out and still hear a normal conversation? Most CB's will pick up lotsa other noise, mine picks up ignition noise a bit with a stock HEI.

Hey Depdog. That new Crane ignition is causing too many problems with your CB. Just give up and I'll gladly trade you my stock HEI for the Crane ignition! Just kidding man!

If you have a old car stereo laying around, hook it up and see if it gives you the same noise. Your CB may be sensative to the ignition. Could always buy a new CB at Walmart and see what it does and return it later.

Coiling up the coax will cause your S.W.R.'s to fluxuate, causing distortion and lack of distance and reception. Take your extra cord and bunch it up in a random pattern and stuff it were u want it.

Wally World sells a set of 40 Channel hand held CBs for around $50. Maybe Dep should get a set of those for offroad trips that do not require alot of distance to reach other people. I know this is not a cure for the problem. I am sorry I dont have a cure.

VULTURE!!!

Circling above the soon to die... Its deff. the ignition. Have ruled out everything else. I have also tried 3 different c.b.'s, hooked them up in different spots and tried different antennas. I am gonna call Crane again today and get some more info. Might make a box to sheild the ignition to see if it will contain some of the racket. I can squelch it out, but then I dont have hardly any range to talk to people.

Thanks for all the tips and help. This has been the worse PITA on the whole damn K-5.

Why can't you mount your ignition box either on the fenderwell or firewall or something.. You could even use your handy dandy metal work skills to make a steel plate box for the ign. system . Wouldn't that block all the interference? That's what I would do . What about moving the cb to your console and the ign farthest to the front of the truck as you can. I think that might fix it.

Hey DepDog,
Just two questions: 1. Why is the CB grounded back to the battery? 2. How close is the ignition box to the CB/or coax?

I had this problem with an old 69 pickup, replaced CB, coax, ant., and a few other things and just gave up. Couple months later I did a tune up and it went away. It was the plugs and wires! I used Boush Platnum plugs and Spiro Pro wires, cleaned it right up.

Is your squelch turned up? Mine did that then fooled with the squelch. Sorry if this has already been said.

Damn, this is getting to be a long post. Hope others are getting some good tips from this. To cap the new questions asked by all.

It has new Sound Suppresion wires, and new Resistor Plugs. The ignition is mounted where the glove box used to be. The C.b. is on the top of the dash where the stock speaker used to be. I can kill it with the squelch, but my c.b. range is very short like this.

Called Crane and they know its the ignition, its also the race model and it was never designed to be quiet. They do have a quieter model. They are sending me the 38,000mf capacitor and its in a kit form with mounting hardware and some other stuff. Said that if this does not make is satisfactorily quiet ( I dont expect it to be perfect, but Usable I do need) that to get back with them and I could trade it for the quieter model that they have.

The tech support is not a toll free number, but they are first rate and go out of their way to find a fix for your problem.

Hey, I have thought about doing that to the ignition, no crap. With my luck it would turn the damn thing into a micro wave and fry my intestines or something

depgod

you could try puting a steel box around your ignition the steel will keep in some of the raido noise, they use to haft to do this on old F/Glass cars be caus there was no steel to block the RF form geting to the raido.

this might work dont know thow never tryed it

I love this post. I realy love some of the anssers about the coax. What do you do with the extra coax? cut the cabel and put on a new end your swr will go down ant TX power will go up! Why gorund the CB to the battery not right ot the cab? By running the ground and the power to the Battery you donr get any ground loops ! ( a gound loop is were the ground can change path as the truck/car moves due to body flex) The fix from CRANE sounds like the right thing the cap will trap out the noise from the ECM. The ECM is TX the sounf right in to the CB though the ant. not the power wires

I understand the jeep thing I drive a BLAZER!!
