Question for y’all, on which specific year did GM start bonding the trans tunnel humps on our squares ?
Or to make it easier please reply with if yours came bolt on or bonded and what year model it is - this way we get real world results.

My guess is that 84 was the last of the bolt on humps since GM did so many changes for the 1985 model year - also, every 85+ square I have ever seen has had the bonded hump.

The newest square that I recall having a bolt on hump was my 83 K-3500 crew cab but I can’t say that I have ever specifically pulled a 84 model hump out to know for sure.

Please reply with what yours came with and what year it is/was ?
Thanks, Tom

My 84 K10 has the one piece floor.
It sucks to pull the sm465 out because the shift tower hits the floor. One time when I did a clutch I unbolted and jacked up the passenger side of the body.

‘80 K10 - bolted in
‘91 Blazer- bonded (no signs of adhesive squished out of the seam though like some older trucks I’ve seen)

My other trucks just to add to the list.

73 K20 bolt in
77 K10 bolt in
78 K20 bolt in friends truck
81 K10 bolt in friends truck
81 K1500 bokt in friends truck
83 K3500 bolt in
83 K30 bolt in
85 K5 bonded
86 K5 bonded
87 K10 Burb bonded friends truck

When I was turning wrenches I noticed that every 73~80 was a bolt in hump.

John, do you remember what Rollers Suburban had ?

Most of what you saw was a '74 4wd tub which had a bolt in hump. I believe the current white version is a later model tub but he built it after moving to Tx so I'm not familiar with the details.

78 K20 bolted

So are the bonded ones the same as bolted ones only glued? Like could you drill holes and make them bolted? I thought they went straight from bolted to one piece floors?

Yeah, you can pry it loose somehow and then drill it but you’d have to be careful not to mangle the flange getting it loose.

That stuff that they bond it with is impressively stout !
The first one I ever tried to pry loose ( 86 K-5 ) ended up looking like a starving Rottweiler had been chewing on the edges.
The next bonded one I took off I used a section of wire and worked it back and forth like a saw - it took forever but with much better results!

I wonder if there was ever any production running changes made to the floor sections through the years that effected the bolt area section of the humps ?

I know that the 2WD’s are all shallow humps with the exception of the ones that came with the 465’s - they used the taller 4WD K-series humps due to the added height of the 465’s case and shift cover dimensions.

Got pics? My 91 is bonded.

Here’s a reference pic of an old crusty bolt in cover out of a 78 K-20 with a 465/205 combo.

I had to use a torch to heat up the goo on the last "not bolted" one I helped with. Propane torch brings that shit right up
Damn, why didn’t I think about that … I worked my butt off sawing back and forth with my hand in that little gear shifter hole.
Great idea !
