C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!! ****UPDATED****

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

if it has a 6in lift and 36's, you'd better stay away if it was on stock 10 bolts because if you wheel with those sooner or later they're def. gonna break with those big tires....other than that, just look out for rusty floors and rockers and welcome

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

If you really want a good K5 to start a build up talk to Grim from here. His wifes K5 is for sale in the for sale forum. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

Hey Pual, I'm glad I could help. I am also glad you are doing your reserch as I recomended. I suggested you go with a gas engin, but as others are recomeneding and you are leaning towards a disel probably would be better for you. Thats why I suggested that you resech first, becuase once you buy something, your pretty much stuck with it. I know verry little about disels, and I didnt mean to make them sound like a bad choice. I would still recomend an 87 or newer, even if you get a disel on account of the Tranny mostly. In one post, you mentioned that you were interested in big nasty loud swampers, but then in another post you asked what would be a good tire for a mostly road truck that would wear well. For that purpse, I would recomend the BFGoodrich all Terains, They arnt cheap, and they arnt extreamly aggressive, or loud, but they are a great on/off road tire that looks good, will wear evenly, last you a long time, and are verry good in the snow as well. Someone else mentioned the axles. If its sitting on 36s, you will need to be careful with a 10 bolt rear axle. Most people recomend not to go hire than 35s with 10 Bolt Axles. Even then, you will need to be gentle, 10 bolts arnt the strongest axle in the world, and the later modle blazers only came with them. However, you can always swap axles. Just look around this site for more info on that. Keep the questions coming.

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

ok guys im still looking around...who was it that has the k5 for sale? im not ready to buy one yet, im just looking. i saw my friend today that sold his eclipse and bought a wrangler with 33"(?) mickey thompson bajas...those tires look sweet! does anyone on here have them or have had them? what kind of lift kits do you recommend for a student budget? i want big but not too big, like 6" maybe? my palms get sweaty thinking about driving a truck! i can't wait, i hope i don't make a wrong decision though and buy something stupid...
can anyone tell me about turbo kits for the desiels????

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

Banks makes a turbo kit for the 6.2/6.5...not sure how well it fits a student budget, but maybe worth checking into.

I think it would be great if you were towing or lived at a fairly high altitude...aside from that I don't see it as a mandatory thing. My 6.2 is still NA and it runs pretty strong.

My advice is to spend a month or so here reading everything you can to get a better background on these trucks. All the info to answer your every question is here buried in the archives. Once you feel you have a good knowledge base then start to shop around.

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

welcome to the board. im from rome, but im in cartersville alot. if i see a blazer for sale here in the next week or so, then i will give you a shout. i do have an 88 with a blown motor if you want to learn how to re-build a motor. haha. other than that it is a good truck. hope to see you get a blazer and have fun with it.

the one thing i would sujest is not to jsut go buy a lifted blazer jst because it looks cool lifted and all. find one that has no rust, and runs good. id also say that if you are gonna be driving far to and from college, get a blazer with the 31 gallon fuel tank. it makes life easier. once again welcome. where are you going to college in TN? where are you at high school?

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

Welcome to CK5.

Now on the Diesel I can say they take a beating and keep on ticking, or should I say sucks up water and keeps on ticking. Just look in my signature and take a look at the Midwest Spring K5 Thing pics. Yes, that is a 6.2 Diesel Blazer hydrolocked in the middle of a lake. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Fuel mileage.....FUEL mileage..not gas mileage...they get sh!tty gas mileage, but great fuel mileage. I run anywhere from 20 - 27 mpg and with a 30 gallon FUEL tank I can go along way!!

Might I also suggest...

and the Diesel board here on CK5.

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

thanks for all the replies guys! i go to school at mt paran christian school in marietta. im goin to college at lee university. its a small private college in cleveland, tenn. i think its a little over 100 miles one way. i've made it from the campus to my house in an hour and twenty minutes in my civic /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif i guess i can kiss those days goodbye when i get a truck/suv/whatever...but thats probably a good thing. it'll keep me out of trouble (somewhat). along with blazers, i've been looking into jeep cherokees. im just exploring all options right now. i get to drive my friends 99 cherokee classic every so often and i like the feel of it even though its stock. plus, cuz its an 6cylinder (btw, why do all these fools when they go to sell it say its a v6 when its an inline 6!!! that makes me mad! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) it'll get better gas mileage than the 350 v8 and probably the diesel. of course, i wouldnt get to take the top off without pullin out the ol' sawzall /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif but oh well, i still have time to make my decision...
for those of you who have (sound) systems in their k5s, how do they sound? are the acoustics just horrible, or not so bad? how many watts do you have to make it relatively loud?
ok well i've spilled all my inquiries....now its time for some answers!
thanks everyone!!!!

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

Hey everyone! i've kept my search up and i found what i think is a pretty sweet deal. i figured that i'd show y'all, the experts.
here's the autotrader link:
1983 Blazer
tell me if the link doesn't work. i'm excited about this one!

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

Looks good. Not a bad deal. Talk him down to 1500 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
It probabally has a early type 700r4(4 speed with overdrive) in it if there are tranny problems. they are not very good trannys.
If it has a 700r4 and you buy it dont bother getting the tranny that is in it rebuilt. Get a new 700r4/4l60 from GM they cost around 1200 and come with all the good upgraded parts and have a good guarentee.

A few things...my roomate has a 99 Cherokee with the 4.0L and stock 3.08 gears and 33" pro-comps, and his mileage is in the 16-17 range most times, which is worse than the diesels. Also, if you want topless wheeling in a Cherokee its cheaper to swing by downtown (as in ) before you head for the hills. Because of the unibody design the entire body provides structural support, so to get rid of the top you need to integrate some sort of roll-cage setup into the unibody, and its not the easiest thing to do.

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

Looks like a pretty good deal to me. Be sure to check for rust though.

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

haha thanks for the tips on topless fourwheeling. i was just joking, btw. well guys, i was discussing the whole trading-my-car-for-a-truck thing with my best friend. he has a 76 suburban with a small block 400, dual carbs, flows, a dually rear wheel conversion and random other stuff. he gets about 8 mpg right now. i just cant afford that! i know a blazer with a 350 would get better, but still not good. i don't know if i just just shift my focus to 4cyl wranglers and toyotas for the best milage or what. im definitely not going back to get a car. i need something with 4wd, danggit!

Re: C O N V E R T E D R I C E B O Y !!H E L P!!

And 83 wouldn't be to bad and yes the early 700r's were mostly junk, It doesn't say if it's a rebuilt or what, But if you were going to get it and had to put a new tranny in the rebuilt will come with the updates. My 83 get about 13/14mpg on the Hy. Now you could update the 350 with FI and get a lot better mpg.
The other thing to look for is the rust and the frame around the steering box. But from what I can see it doesn't look to bad.
