I have a '69 C10 with a 500hp full roller 383 stroker that has an open 12 bolt diff. I need to make it spin both tires, but don't have a lot of coin to do it. This thing is hardly driven (show truck) so I don't know if a mini-spool would work out or not. I have a front LockRight and rear Detroit EZ Locker in my 1 ton 4x4, but those are too expensive for me to throw in this 12 bolt right now. Any other options that won't break the bank?

Is there any fear in snapping an axle shaft with a spool or welding spiders? I know how to drive and will only "get on it" on the straightaways and take it easy in the corners.

i really liked my auburn posi. not cheap but definately a great street unit.

A buddy of mine has one for sale $325.

The weak link in the 12 bolt is the carrier, I would go with a full detroit but they aren't cheap. Like was said you could weld it but you'll end up with a broken carrier pretty quick i'll guess with that much motor.

The carrier on this thing is different than the spare gov-lock carrier I have for a set of 3.73 gears. This rear end has 2.73 gears...so maybe the carrier isn't that weak??

Save up for another lock-right. Mini spools are for dirt track racing. You don't want to snap an axle shaft in a chevy. Unlike a ford 9" and other rearends, there is no positive axle retention and your axle can fall out... Whatever you do, don't run slicks or even drag radials. You might be able to get away with it on street radials.

500 HP is a lot. Things happen quickly with that kind of power. If you snap an axle shaft, you won't have time to react and you will probably end up in the other lane in about 1 second.

How did you get a 500 hp full roller 383 if you don't have a lot of coin? Don't get cheap on the rear axle, that's a lot of power to be playing around with.

JDS - It's a long story and about 10 years + in the making. The short version: I originally got the engine 5 years ago for cheap from a totaled truck when the engine was near new. Last year I swapped it out of my 4x4 for a 489 BBC. I swapped the 383 into my wife's '69 C10 and now that I have it running right, the truck won't move forward without smoking the right rear tire. It has 13" wide street tires on it, so I have to make this thing hook so I can drive it. I probably will save up for the Lock-right, thanks for the advice!

The old 12 bolt limited slips are good units if you can find one. They are not like the gov-locks. They are made like an eaton limited-slip. Clutches under the side gears & spring & plates between the side gears. They might still be a weak link but not as bad as the gov-bombs. I run one in my '69 C-10 behind a very heathly 468 & have had good luck. Granted it will not hook-up even with 295/65/15 drag radials. If you can scavange one it shouldn't break the bank. They came stock in some of the trucks from that era.

Looks like this one: http://www.dragtimes.com/parts/GM-875-POSI-LIMITED-SLIP-10-12-BOLT-28-SPLINE-8875_160496822271.html

Care to elaborate?

I've seen many, many broken 10 and 12 bolts but not sure I've ever really seen a carrier failure. I've seen pictures of them.

The carrier where the cross pin goes through is where they give problems when you add HP. I've destroyed my fair share of them with lots of HP in front of them. Usually the cross pin hole gets wallered out then a BIG BOOM is next that lays all of the guts out the bottom of the housing.

Does anyone know if the LockRight will work with a 2.73 gear ratio? That is the conflicting info I have gotten and don't want to order one if it won't fit.

lockright and others this style fit in place of the spider gears in a open diff non posi or gov-loc rear. still leaves you with the weak carriers.

but not to bad to install in driveway.

I thought it didn't matter what gears were used, but the "gear guy" near me got me worried. The LockRight in my Dana60 works bitchin', so I think I'll go with it in the 12 bolt for now...and if I snap something down the road I'll go bigger then.

So, you don't have enough money to "do it right" the first time BUT you have enough money to replace broken parts later? :doah:

x1000000

and i have seen less than 500 hp on the street eat bigger axles than the 12 bolt.

and if you want to trust a lunch box locker as there called to that kind of power on hard blacktop use please carry a camere or this will be posted in here next. :sign6:

That's right, its Xmas time and I have a baby on the way. And unfortunately the axle is all apart right now, so no sense in putting it back together in stock form where its really undriveable. I don't drive it that much and won't ever jump on it in a turn, so the few times a year I really get on it in a straight line will be it...and the fear of braking a carrier will always be in the back of my mind:deal:

Your biggest problem is your 273 gear ratio, thats hard on everything and your motor wants to make your tire go sixty right off the line. sucks for mpg too as detroit found out the hard way in the seventies.

Dont weld it... idid it and i already want to take the thing out.

ALso i disagree with the breaking the carrier issue, what kind of driver are you..are you a guys that pushes the pedal all the way through the floor en every green light??? if so still how much HP can you develope in town till the next stop sign or red light or traffic, ive run my truck for a while i have a 12 bolt rear a mighty shift kit and 383 engine and havent run it to trouble yet and i do get crazy and slam on the pedal every once in a while....if it were a 4x4 truck then yes id agree if you are the type of guy that insist of climbing something and makes the truck jump from traction rather than taking in over the obstacle the right way. DID ALL THAT CRAP MADE SENSE????
