For those that have built there own cage, how many feet of tubing did you end up buying/using. Going to have to redo my cage:mad: . Also please post pics of your cages, I would like to get some more ideas.

The 3 cages I built all ended up using around 100' each..

Being 6.2' and having a prebent cage is not working out. When mounting my seats, they are allready 1.5" lower than stock and I only have 1/5" of forking clearence above my head and top hoop. The more I lower my seat the less I can see over the hood.

Ya whats the deal. You have a bender too?

No don't have a bender, going to pay a freinds dads shop to do it, They have a computerized bender. I am so forking tired/pissed off at working on the is thing, I would love to just pay someone to finish it.

Are you going to use the new ned tech pro program, comes out i a few days I believe? Man I hope I don't run into that problem when I build my cage, I'm only 5'9" but I want to keep my hardtop too!

Not sure on the program, I am just going to tell them what I want and get some pictures of other cages for example.

OH NO. Thats not good. My S&W cage is supposed to come this week. And im 6'1". I hope I dont hit my head, as my seats are in the stock location. Does the cage really take up THAT much room? You said before that your 6'2" and dont have problems hitting your head. Did your head being that close to the cage just get really really annoying after time?

i sat in tim's i am 6' 6" and i hit my head but "tim warned us all that it fits like ****"

i do want to say the main hoop in his had to be cut to fit

so i don't know

but i will make mine because i am taller

It's in a Heep, but something like this may give you some more headroom.

You should be able to gain a few inches in headroom if you make yours similar in that area.

Another Heep with added headroom

If I'm understanding you correctly, it doesn't sound like all is lost.....

The complaint about clearance is NOT from the main hoop is it? From the looks of it, the problem is that the upper halo is the messing with you....from the drivers seat, it gets awfully close to the left side of your head???

The problem is that the way most halos attach to the main hoop, forces them to be narrow and they get really close to your head.

The solution is probably pretty simple:

Cut out the existing halo and front A-Pillar tubes.

Bend up a new set of A-pillars that will go from the floor, up past the dash, along the windshield (and slightly ABOVE the upper windshield frame) before making their final bend to allow them to attach to the main hoop.

If you attach these bars to the horizontal part of the main hoop, you will pick up a number of extra inches over the design you have pictured. You won't have to "Scrap" the entire cage either.....just rework the front section.

This solution doesn't have a "halo" anymore...it's two long complex A-pillar tubes that would ultimately be attached up front with a bar across the top of the windshield frame. People will argue all day about which style is stronger...but ultimately it has a lot more to do with the quality of the welding, and the gusseting...than the "style" you choose.

I think I used about 110'. My cage is 2" .120 HREW
I am not finished with it though. I plan on a spreader at the A post, runners between A and B posts, a V in the B post and V or / between B and C posts. I like the full halo it adds a bit of head room.

ok I asked this in the other S&W cage post and got no response so... All the cage pics being posted are in full convertables anyone put one in a half cab and if so can in be tacked up and removed to complete the welds and paint or does everything have to be done in place?

Great question. I was wondering the exact same thing.

When I did the cage on the '77K5, I mocked everything up and did the welding for the A-pillars and bracing first, then installed the front part of the cage into the truck. Once you weld it to the main hoop, you're committed....Because of the step behind the front seats, you'll never be able to slide it back out once you weld the A-pillars to the main hoop.

Fortunately, getting 360* welds on the main hoop is pretty easy on a 1/2-Cab if you place the main hoop carefully...

The main hoop is also a problem, the way the cage tapers in like this is my problem /-\. My head is only 1/2" away from there too. The whole front of the cage will have to be redone. I plan on doing the main hoop like the pick in the heep. 2 90" bends and strait down to the floor. I also want to rework the back so I have a place for an ice chest.

I also plan on doing the halo hoop like this one. Above the window frame. Should give me plenty of room.
