My sons friend had me look at a 83 k10 last night to see if it was worthy to be purchased by a 16 year old.

The truck is a short wheelbase with a stepside bed and has what looks like a 4" lift springs and blocks. Tires are roughly 32" and in fair shape.

It looks completely unmolested in the engine bay. The interior has been redone in some odd but not too bad material. Needs a headliner, It has been painted three times the guy selling it said.

Here is the question, What would something like this be worth? Since it appears to be a southern California truck as there is not a spot of rust anywhere in the usual places( cab corners, rocker boxes), and it has already been lifted I would say it is worth $2500.00 or more realistically if it was in Colorado where I have experience buying these type of trucks.

My sons friend is excited for this truck but his Dad doesn't really want something that needs a lot of work. I will be working on it with him and I see it as a great opportunity for him to learn as he repairs things.

What say you guys?

Well you say it needs work?
What kind of work.
If the body is as good as you say and the running gear is in good shape but could be improved I say you are on target, but I have seen a lot of truck go for less here because of the economy.
I am still holding on to my vehicles because they are worth more than the market rates these days.
Plus with the Dollar weakening as it is, having actual items is better than the money.:dunno:

Normally the blazer is very overpriced here in CA. That said, the pickup is normally the great bargain. Most of the time you can get HD axles, better motors, and interiors than what a similarly priced K5 goes for.

Just recently watched a 6" lift, 81, nice crate 260 or 290 (can't remember), solid body (stockish white paint), solid 4x4 pieces, 4speed/205, and decent interior go for 5k. I don't know if it was worth it, but I worked on this truck some and know the new owner wont have any problems with it.

How about letting us know what the seller is asking for the rig and then based on your description we can tell you if it seems overpriced or not. :deal:

My plan was to see what the general consensus was before I gave up the price.

The seller said he wanted $1600.00. I think it is way worth it.

The problem is the kid REALLY wants this rig but his Dad doesn't think it's worth $700.00.

My plan here was to see if the brotherhood saw the value in this rig as I have and then it will help me help the kid as his Dad is not mechanically minded, doesn't have any experience to help his kid and has no interest in off roading so He wants him to go get a newer rig. He even offered the kid $15,000.00 for a newer rig and the kid still wants this.
This kid and my son were under my sons pickup yesterday installing the front lift springs on my kids 84 K20 and he was having a blast.

Can you see the photo that I put in the thread? Sometimes when I look at the thread I see the X and sometimes I see the pic........

no pic

that's sad, and normally how it happens, where the parents have no interest in such a hobby but the son is into it. That's how families and sons end up treehuggers and completely against our past time. They haven't a clue what it's about. This truck could bring lame asz dad and fun son together :)

Dad sounds like he is limp wristed. Anyhow, I bought my 1986 K10 SWB with a newer GM crate engine and no dents or rust to be found and paid $3k for it. It had new tires and the old "emissions" engine as well. So if it isnt a heap $1600 isnt bad. Especially if it has no rust.

Just a different mindset than us, my parents never wanted me to buy anything that I bought in high school and a bit later in life offered to buy me a newer car they would use it for a year when they could afford a different car and they would give me the year old car. I said no.

If the truck is sound mechanically I say its totally worth it. These really are great trucks to learn mechanics on. Thing about it is this too, if he keeps the truck nice he can probably sell it for what he bought it for or more.

Good luck helping him out Tom

I personally figure that if an older vehicle runs, could be safely driven on the freeway, and has no back fees it's worth in the neighborhood of $1000. If it's otherwise a beater or has rust issues I come down off that number. If it's got features I like and the body/interior are good then I go up from there.

I can't see a pic, but the asking price of $1600 sounds pretty fair based on your description.

Thanks for the bumps guys and the dad is a bit of an odd duck but the family has a ranch and a business here in town so they do have some cool things going for them.

The dad just isn't wired for mechanical things.

The pic shows up for me when I open the thread so I am not sure how to change it so you can see it as well.
