caliper hitting bracket with 14bff disc swap (with pics)

i got everything put together with my 14 bolt and when i went to mock up my calipers to see how they'd line up a piece of the caliper hits the bracket. i will have to get pics tomorrow, but what would ya'll do, just grind that spot off of the caliper? anyone else run into this problem?

i don't know what brand brackets they are either, they came with the axle when i bought it
 
My buddy had the same problem, i think he just hit the bracket quick with the angle grinder and problem solved.
 
I had the same problem. A quick swipe with a grinder on the bracket did the trick. :waytogo: I also had to gind some of the top of the caliper for wheel clearance.
 
I remember one of the vendors (don't remember who) saying that they intentionally cut the opening for the caliper small, so that you could grind to fit. if the caliper ALMOST touches the bracket, it provides support when the brackets flex a little.
 
Depending on which caliper you're using, I'd bet the bracket fabricator only used one type of caliper to check for clearance.

The two calipers with different size banjo bolts are NOT indentical in size or shape. One is slightly bigger than the other. Hence the reason the fabricator may have used the smaller caliper and you possibly have the bigger ones.

Which one is the smaller and bigger one? I can't remember right now and don't have any spares to compare them side by side.

How did I find out about this? I got brackets from a fabber off eBay and planned to use the metric banjo bolt calipers and they did not fit his brackets at all. So I swapped the calipers for the older 7/16" sized banjo bolt calipers and they fit like a glove. Reason I wanted to use the metric banjos was that it would be easier to have the same size as the front axle which was the D60 and everyone knows those are the 10mm bolts. Having two different sizes would create confusion, etc.

If I were you, I swap the calipers for the other kind and see how they fit. This would save you lots of elbow grease from grinding.
 
My calipers were the metric banjo bolt ones ('85 IIRC) and my brackets were from Ruff Stuff. Just a quick brush with the grinder was all that was required for the caliper to drop down in the bracket.
 
the guy at the parts store gave me 2 different calipers on accident, i have metric on the front, which should i return?

also, i am using the spring pads from DIY4X and with the pinion angle set the way it needs to be the top caliper pin hits the plate, should i just grind the plate so i can get the pin out or flip the bracket? the way the caliper sits the bleeder is pointing straight up

did you assemble everything yet? If not, put the pads in and bleed it, it looks to me that when the piston comes out to make contact with the pad, it will actually push away from the bracket.

no, it hasn't been completely assembled, there isn't enough room to put the pads in on the metric one and i can't get the pin to line up on the standard (if i start with the bottom i can't get the top and if i start with the top i can't get the bottom, well now that i have the pinion angle set i can't even put the top pin in...)

so, which calipers do i want to keep, the metric one or the standard one? also, should grind the calipers or the bracket?
 
I'd keep the calipers that match your front ones. This way you can remember that both front and rear have the exact same size bolts.

Grind the calipers. I'd hate to grind the brackets and fuuck them up accidentally. At least with a fubar caliper, you can return it for another one.
 
:dunno: Which ever calipers fit better. I'd grind the bracket so you don't have to do it again if you ever need to replace the caliper.

in the pic with the metric caliper (the gold one) if i trace where the caliper hits and cut that out the bracket do yall think that will mess with the strength of the bracket enough to worry about it?
 
It sure seems like that part should be inboard of the bracket when everything is assembled.
