I am looking at putting some heads on a 454 out of a 1992 Chevy GEN V motor. The Motor is going into my 71 Blazer. I have read good things about putting a set of L-29 Vortec heads to bump up the compression and performance on a GEN V 454 . I also heard good things about the 14097088 (088) heads from the 454/502 HO motors GEN V. I can pick up the 088 heads for 800 bucks. But if waiting on a good set of L-29's would be best I can do that instead.

Please Advise...

I am not looking for over the top HP/TRQ but something that will get me past the 230hp / 280ft pounds it comes stock with. I plan on putting 40's on and driving on the pavement! :eek1:

Thanks for the help!

Hey brandon , ive just finished putting a set of 088,s on my big block , they are fantastic !! There is alot of big block gurus hew believe that rectangle port heads dont belong on a big block thats in a heavy blazer , i can safely say that i am running a 454 , holley 750 double pumper , 270 comp cam 4x4 extreme energy cam , 088 heads with matching intake , holley fuel pump and big headers. My motor was at the stock 230 hp mark now i believe its in the low 400s now . the accelaration mid and top end are drastically changed when i put the cam and heads on !! Im like you i very rarely take it of road , its more of a OH my god how does something that big and heavy go so fast its just wrong !! kinda type deal LOL. Go for the 088 you wont be disapointed !
Hope this helps.

If Scott (4X4HIGH) doesn't find this thread and respond directly send him a PM.... he lives and breathes this stuff daily.

He's the CK5 "Rain Man" when it comes to part numbers and interchange, and specs. It's all in his head..... freaky! :D

This is what I will tell you with my line of thinking. I belive trucks should have truck engines. That being said 8-9 to one compression, small cam, peanut port or ovals, a dual plane intake and a q-jet or Holley. I have seen a bunch of write ups on vortec bbc heads and they claim they don't flow as well as the heads you already have. I wouldn't get all wound up with horsepower when more than likely you will never see the 5500-6000 rpm peak but will be trying to lug it down the highway or on some trail. Build for torque and you will be happy. I have a 660hp roller 427 in my camaro, its not happy below 3000 and idles at 1600. These are not the kinda engines that work good in a truck.

What brand of headers are those? I like the thick flange at the head end.

That's what I'm talking about! I'm not lookin to break any records but, it sure would be nice to get some looks when that thing gets up and go's! Thanks for tip. much appreciated.

Thanks Greg, I'll send him a PM and pick the brain! :D

^Good luck with that. Better gear and get a converter.

Just my experience with these...

I have a 1992 GenV 454 in my 87 K5.

I rebuilt it with stock heads (cleaded up the casting flash and smoothed them up a bit, decked, valve job, yadda yadda) stock intake, Eagle H-beams, Speed-Pro Flat-Top Hypereutectic slugs, GMPP "Truck Torque" cam, Comp Magnum rockers, and Doug Thorley Headers and pretty much stock TBI setup (matched injectors, higher fuel pressure and heated O2). This setup has proven to be PERFECT for my truck (40" IROKS with 4.56's). It is not a hot rod motor but it pulls HARD to 3300 RPM.
