hey everyone, ive got my hands on a LS 5.3 V8.. it came out of a 2006 chevy pickup, and it needs cam and lifters... after looking at the prices from GM, (about $1,000 for everything, including gaskets) $740 of witch is the cam and lifters... so does anyone know of an aftermarket company that might be cheeper? im looking to keep it as stock as possible.. any advise is great!

Well, during my research so far on the engine I just had redone, I believe, and I hate saying this, Rockauto.com was about the cheapest on most things I have found as far as the stock camshaft and lifters.

I called around a few places, and even local auto parts store had had the cam & lifters at a slightly lower price than you are saying. The head gaskets are kind of crazy at around the $50 mark each. Local auto parts store are saying about $42 each for lifters, Rock Auto has them a bit cheaper. Cams were in the low $400 range at the store, again Rock Auto had them cheaper.

Internet search is about the best I can say. Or you could even find a low mileage used cam and lifter setup, they'll work, trust me. :doah:

ls1tech.com

great info site and huge fast moving sale forum section .

simple friendly cam swap on these 5.3 can get you from 300 hp to 450ish all day and still run great and good fuel mileage from what i have read .

why new cam/lifters ? if the lifters are good then you can reuse as there roller .

and dont need to pull the heads or intake on these motors .

Thanx for the info guys, I will keep lookin around! My brother who works at the dealership got the engine Cus the truck came in with a lifter tap, they pulled it apart and found the cam is wiped out due to a siezed roller. so they replaced the engine with a used one. The guy had some aftermarket warrentee so there was no core on it. I guess its common for those to go bad like that. he said there has a bunch of trucks coming in with this problem..it came complete with heads, intake, accessory bracket, water pump, flywheel, exhaust manifolds, and coil packs. The engine has 101k on it, so we are planning on doing the swap into my 86 k5. At this point we just want to put the engine back together and ready to go, then find the rest of the parts we need for the swap:)

I have an 04 5.3 with 170k on it, ran great before I pulled it, and inside looks pretty much brand new. Hopefully it will last a while once I get it in my truck, or I'll have to build it for more power...lol not that I'd mind that of course
