Cam choices

I bought a Crane RV cam for SBC in 1980 and the lobes were ground so big it wouldn’t even fit in the cam bearings. Wtf?

I just built a 350 from all swap meet junk. Early 70's Vette block with some 200k vortec heads. Hot tanked heads and checked for cracks. Used GM LS factory beehives with comp cams retainers. Fit perfectly. I bought a Edelbrock proflo 2 off Craigslist. It had the chip for a cam with 210-220 duration at .50. I bought the summit K1103 cam kit. Makes great vacuum. Runs like an absolute animal. I am fully blown away. YMMV

I've used Comp Cams in almost all my engines. I've only had one failure, but think that was my fault, over tightened a rocker arm. Put a new cam/lifters, and was good to go. Like many said already, it's the oil used in break ins. Last motor I built was a 454, builder told me to run diesel oil in it for the break in. Broke in just fine. Changed the cam again, not sure what oil I used, but ran like a mo fo.

I loved the Edelbrock Performer intake and cam set up on my '89. It had great bottom end and was right in the middle of the tq band at highway speeds. Never had a problem hunting for gears or holding speed up a grade w/ 4.56s and 35s

What kind of tranny were you running?

I remember running Wolverine Blue Racer camshafts back in the day. They where American made low budget performance camshafts manufactured by Federal Mogul, but they worked.
