Cam install with motor in truck?

Ok got another one for you guys tonight. I'm sick of the cam thats in my truck. I hit the power band WAY too late and can feel how out of wack the computer is when the O2 sensor isnt kicked on yet. SOOOO I want to swap the cam out for a mild, hydro flat lunati voodoo.

Its a 60101LK

Adv Dur In: 256 Out: 262
Lift at .50 In: 213 Out:219
Adv Lift with 1.5's In:454 Out:468

Do you guys think thats too wild for not tuning the computer? I gotta see if I have the crane cams specs that are in there right now.


Either way what is involved in changing a cam with the motor in the truck. I mean I can assume the obvious like pulling the intake to change the lifters, pulling the radiator, probably hacking a whole in the rad support to pull the cam straight out. Am I missing anything though?
 
Ugh just found a how to on google. Sounds like a PITA, thats gonna take a 30 pack to do one night :D

Basically its:

Drop front of oil pan

Pull timing cover

Pull intake

Loosen rockers

Pull cam

Reinstall

Lash valves...
 
It's not that hard, I just did it a couple months ago. I had to build a platform first cause my truck has 8 inches of lift and 35 BFGs. The AC condenser has to come out also. Just take your time and make sure everything is good and clean.

This is stating the obvious, but I think you'll end up removing all of the engine driven accessories and associated brackets. Water pump has to come off and you'll need a harmonic balancer puller as well.

You'll have to remove the distributor, and a little time spent beforehand will make the job easier later.

Before you remove the distributor rotate the crankshaft so the marks on the timing gears are lined up. Then take the cap off the distributor and mark which way the rotor is pointed and another reference mark which way the distributor is pointed.

That way when you reassemble things, line up the marks on the new timing chain and gears (you are going to install a new timing chain and gears, right?) and you can re-install the distributor using the reference marks.
 
IMO that cam is right at the line for a stock ECM/Chip. The 218 duration is a little high.
It should run on the stock chip. But a custom chip will be best.

If you havent already bought a cam. Go down 1 size to a 60100. If you are running stock TBI heads That cam will be perfict for you.
I have found with cams.. If there are two choices that will work. Always take the smaller cam. You will be happier . Unless building the engine for a specific performance/ range
