I am wondering(after doing some searching) if I can use my newely rebuilt and tapped 2wd steering box with my stock steering for the time beaing while I save up for cross over? I am haveing a work party this weekend so I was gonna try to get the box in then. Do i need to wait or will it work?

The 2wd box uses a different style of attachment for the pitman arm than the 4wd box does but if you have a 2wd pitman arm and measure from the center of the sector shaft to the center of the DLE and it is the same distance then you could possibly clock the pitman arm so that it points at the driverside wheel like the stock 4wd box does and use it.

You can always swap the 4wd sector shaft into the 2wd box and properly adjust the overcenter adjustment (this is assuming that both boxes are of the same type, either both standard ratio or both variable ratio).

On a related note. Doesn't anybody make a pitman arm with the keyway 90 degrees from where it should be stock. That would save a lot of people from having to convert to 2wd boxes. Either I'm missing something here or I just came up with a huge "why didn't I think of that" invention.

It would be a pretty big investment to do the design and tool it up for production, as compared to simply swapping in a 2wd box or swapping sectors shafts which is pretty quick and cheap.

Old thread but couldn’t you broach a new keyway?
