Can any of you 1989 owners tell me if this steering setup looks stock?

Just had some issues with buying replacement parts and using the local auto parts store "parts chart" for my year model

Im starting to wonder if this really is a 89 setup on my 1989 4x4. Some of the diagrams that look like my current steering setup are from the 76-80 catalog.

hopefully yours doesnt look like this tho:)

thx

Dont know, but that Tie Rod Bar is Fubar. lol. The rest looks pretty stock to me. Others will know better.

Looks the same as my 1991 stock steering. I always wondered why all parts drawings showed a different(short) tie rod end instead of the longer one I have.
And actually mine has the same "curve" to it.

That's all stock my friend!

Don't mind what the parts book tells you! Just order an entire tie rod from the same page for any 73-91 truck and you'll be good to go!

Tie rod ends are in upside down, and the connecting bar needs some tweeking but it'll work.

D44 TRE's come in from the top but 10 bolt TRE's come in from the bottom. His is a 10 bolt axle and they are in correctly. You can't even install the TRE incorrectly because the taper won't allow it to fit the other way.

77 and later d44's use 10 bolt knuckles, I had one!

hmmm
Mine is a D44, 8 lug, maybe '79 and it has the tierod on the bottom, nut on top. Mine looks exactly like his except the diff cover.

hmm, so what should i use when i go to buy the new stuff? check that link i posted above for a diagram. if i were to order the stuff they show for the 81-91, it wouldnt be what i have.

does anyone have a picture of a tierod on top, nut on bottom? I'm wondering how close the tierod is to the leave springs. Mine would never fit if on top. Hyjack off

Thats a bent tie rod and its not year correct for your '89.

The '81 up to '91 trucks will use a long adjusting sleeve instead of the short one shown in your pics. The TRE's on these years will also be shorter than the ones shown in your pics. These years of trucks utilize a larger jam nut and a long adjusting sleeve where you turn the whole bar shaped tubing which is the sleeve itself.

On the older trucks, the adjusting sleeve is shorter at around 5 or 6 inches long. The TRE's are a short one on one side and the long one which is almost the whole length of the tie rod.

The tie rod shown in your pics was probably swapped onto your '89. Its more commonly found in the 2nd design trucks from '77 up to '80.

X2...my 83 is completely stock and has the long tube which is the adjusting sleeve itself with jam nuts on each end.

Out of the three tie rods shown, I'd order pieces 7, 8, 9 and 10. I don't like the adjuster sleeves like the other two use, I was forever twisting and bending them, then they don't hold right and my toe-in always got messed up. Switched to the threaded tube TRE style and found it was much more durable.

I now use an ORD highsteer tie rod which is again considerably more beefy, haha

Doesn't matter either way though. All the TREs use the same taper so any of the three would work. Only difference is in the steering arm's machining and an inch or two of clearance.

Personally I would order a HD tie rod from either ORD or WFO Concepts and then use the Moog ES2010L and ES2010R TRE's and be done with it for ever. You'll be a little more coin into this way but you'll also have a MUCH stronger Tie rod in the end.

I wouldn't waste the coin on the HD stuff if the rig is only gonna be a street queen.
Now if it was gonna see some hardcore stuff off road, then yeah I agree with the aftermarket parts.
