Took some pics of my front axle & springs. The springs are pretty warped, downward angle. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I have anything on my rig that isn't stock. Like duel front shocks, steering stabilizer, axle anything? The shocks are the only thing with any remains of color (white) so I wondered if they were aftermarket. Just looking to learn some more about my rig. Thanks yall.

I agree, it all appears to be stock parts, the only thing not "run of the mill" is the dual shock option but it's not the Holy Grail or anything. The stock front springs are negative arch so they look shot even when they're new.

good, stock is good. that means she hasn't had a bunch of hacks throwing misc. parts on her. I can be the first to do that! j/k. Thanks guys.

Ideally? I could probably write a full length essay on what I really WANT vs what I really NEED. But eventually I want to start from the beginning. Frame off and do everything right. Just so I know everything that's there and peace of mind that's it's done right. The way I see it, I'll always keep this 86 blazer to fool around with (light bars, axles swaps, nothing's out of question). Then get an original body style to keep original. Of course, this will all happen after I'm a millionaire.

well its best to think things through so you wont have to back track. put it on paper and label it version 1 and expect to change your mind or have it changed a few times along the way .
but if you have a game plan and decide what needs to be done first , it may save you a hardtime or costly redo .

example ther eis no sense replacing the axle and then in 3 months decide to change out the springs . extra work .. unless you have the time for it and want to do it twice .

and Ask questions like your doing these guys know thier stuff.

the sway bar you asked about keeps the nose from "diving " in turn on the highway by stiffening up the effective rate of the springs(resists flex).

Fr 4 wheeling you want the flex (to an extent) to keep tire contact on the ground going over obstacles .

I have the cross over and hi steer form ORd on my 89 .. the swap gets taken out and not replaced . keep that in mind on highway driving , it will corner alot differently.

does it look like I have a steering stabilizer? I didn't think those came stock. There's no way of retaining that if I went to a high steer right? I don't really care, seeing how I don't know what it is. I just don't want my steering to get worse.

yes the stablizer was standard on them.

I wouldnt say mine steers worse .. its better over all now .. replaced the entire steering system .. i use a steering shaft with U joints instead of rag joints ... new 2 wd steer box , ball joints tie rod ends etcetc .. I didnt want to have to redo it .
It is more stable in that respect , but it wont corner as well as it did at high speeds , i gave that up for better off road performance . depends what your trying to do in the long run .. daily driver tow a boat trail rig whatever you decide

I've heard stories of lifted rigs handling better after the lift. That seems bassakwards to me, but if I left the stock steering and sway bar on there then maybe it's possible. Any input?

personally mine handles better for i wanted it to do . its easy to drive at higways speeds and stable. I just wont to do any heavy towing with it or play mario andretti either .lol I have an 06 2500HD with a 496 in it for that stuff ..

If you do stay stock I would replace the worn out springs at any rate and new bushings ball joints tie rod ends etc if you had it apart .

I chose my hi/crossover steer and love it .
I modded a bracket to mount on the Ubolt anchor plates and put a stablizer back in . Havent missed the sway bar at all really.

Next week I'm putting on the 4'' lift. If the cash worked out (on a budget) I could plan on her being out of commish for quite a bit longer and maybe pick up some axles for her. I want to see what that rear 10b can handle tho (and the front 10b for that matter too). Not that I'm purposely going to break it, but I'd personally like to know its limitations. Knowing me, it'll probably break soon enough & then I can pick up some axles already with high steering (hopefully) and I can compare the difference myself. It helps to know it, rather than just read it.

From the way you make it sound, it involves more fabing than I am used to. Guess we will see.

the only Fabing i had to do was to cut the draglink bar ( from the pitman arm to the pass. side knuckle to length ) and to make n 'l' shaped bracket to attack the stabilizer bar to the axle.

the rest was prety much all bolt in .

If you do decide to go thru the conversion to crossover and high steer. a strong recomendation is the ORD frame brace (welds on the frame at steering box) cause that is a known weak sot . and secondly they make a bolt on brace that forms a triangle between the frame , crossmember , and that brace I bolt on kit) it keeps the frame from flexing at that weak spot . offroaddesign.com

I've got so many saved links on my computer to threads from this site. I'm going to have to get another computer just for this site. There is a plethora of info out there that I do not want to loose. This is one of those conversations. Thanks. I'm going to save your sn so I can shoot you a pm in the future if I have any questions. Thanks man.

ps. Someone should start a book of all this stuff. With all the different mods and endless variations of set ups it would beat the hell out of a chiltons.

Good luck , ill try to answer the best i can .. but im a newb compared to the guys here on the site ... COLORADOK5 rules! Best forum on the net IMO. always helping one another out.So much knowledge ... Love it
