I wouldn't even worry about a steering damper, i would do hydro assist and be done. Hydro assist is good for a couple reasons.
(1) It removes half the load off the frame at the steering box (which is the area that likes to crack as previous stated)
(2) It takes place of a steering damper (not physical place but in what it does)
(3) It gives extra steering assist above and beyond the P/S system. You can do the system fairly cheap if you shop around. I run a PSC ram and i drilled and tapped my steering box myself and then found the proper hoses from a local friend.
