Ok this picture isn't of my 14ff but its the same thing...
So I've had this rattle that has made me insane b/c it only happened when the drivetrain was spinning and was completely random as far as speed goes...finally the other night I found out that it was this little bugger rattling around...
Its like a metal dust shield for the bearing...anyways point is mine is rattling around (you can spin it) so can I put a few quick tacks to hold it in place (tack it to the yoke...I think its supposed to spin with the yoke, not stay stationary)?

For now I have some silicone holding it to the yoke and it stopped the rattle 100% but I don't want to leave silicone on it...its sort of ghetto looking...ok thanks guys!

i just took it off, tack weld shouldent hurt anything though.

get it wet
pack a bunch of rock salt around there for awhile

let the rust take care of it, hehe

Id be a little leary of welding it a few takes might help, but id rather go with the silicone trick. get some of the black silicone and smear it on, wont be as noticeable

ok, I was just going to put like two tacks to hold it to the yoke.

The yoke is cast I believe. I wouldn't do it but that is me personally. It doe's serve a purpose though. If I was you I would pull it off to weld it. Would not want to heat up the pinion anymore than needed.

if he is just going to tack it that wont heat the pinion up enough to matter.

Ok wait a sec though are the yokes cast? If so you can't weld on that can you? I was just going to use the MIG @ work b/c thats all I know how to do...

I'm surely not the only person with this little shield on their axle...thousands of 14ff's were sent off from the factory with them. So what do you guys do? I mean I just brought up tacking it in place b/c it would fix it but is there a correct way to do it? Whats supposed to hold it into place on the yoke?

Throw three tack welds on there and call it good. The yoke welds ok enough for this.

This is actually not uncommon. I had to weld mine on when I changed yokes a while back. No biggie.

No need to remove it, most important is to put the ground clamp right on the yoke. If the ground clamp is put on the housing anywhere he'll get arcing through the bearing races. Two tacks isn't going to heat that yoke up anywhere near enough to even worry about.

I weld those all the time(tack weld) on all sorts of different trucks toyotas and samis seem to get loose alot. two or three tacks isn't going to hurt anything weld away

You could try peening it in place with a center punch. The metal is so thin that you'll likely burn right through it with a weld.

I tried that already (before I resorted to silicone) and it didn't really work. We have a nicer set of punches at work than I have at the house here so maybe I could give that a try before tacking it. But either way if that doesn't work I'll just tack it in place.

haha yeah that works too but still, its weird to go rolling through a parking lot or something in a truck with tons of $$$ wrapped up into it and have a stupid little *tink* *tink* *tink*.....
