Looking at wheels and not sure I understand backspacing. Does a higher number of inches of backspacing show more, or less, wheel on the outside? Meaning, what shows more of the wheel, more or less backspacing? Probably something everyone but I know but in looking at wheels the pictures all look the same. Thanks for the help. trukman1

less... a higher # means the tire sits further into the well... you get this by laying a ruler across the back edge of the rim, and measuring down to the wheel mounting surface...

I found out that they go by how far off of center the wheel is from center, mostly in millimeters, and often don't list backspace dimensions. That is going to slow me down in finding new wheels!

Okay, so a wheel with a backspace of 2" will show more rim (outer) than a wheel with 4" of backspace.

I'm taking it to the extreme just to be sure I understand it correctly.

Now I fully understand. And the link to 4wheelparts was especially interesting reading!

Thanks Guys!

sweetK30,

Any recommendations on the best place to purchase?

It will be a quite a while before I'm ready to pull the trigger on some. Just trying to educate myself so I make the right choice when I eventually purchase. Trying to learn which offset and width will work best.

My plan is for 33x12.5x15 BF Goodrich A/T's. I like the looks of "more" rim showing within reason (don't care for the extreme wheels I've seen that some call "skate boards," at least that's what they call them around here.) I had the A/T version tires made back in the '80's and liked those.

The '88 K5 I purchased has brand new Toyo M/T Open Country 31x9.5x15's on stock aluminum wheels but I'm kind of stuck with those till they wear out since they have less than 50 miles on them now and the truck hasn't been driven since I started restoring it as soon as I received it. LOL! (My son says they are very good tires and doesn't want me to change till they're worn out which may be quite a while.) I just like the looks of wider tires better. Planning for "down the road."

My Blazer doesn't have any lift but I ran the 33" A/T's on a stock '84 Jimmy without any problems but don't remember the wheels I had then.

Was looking at Pro Comp wheels but can't figure out the difference between Series 69 and 1069 other than the price. They all look the same to me. Any advice?

Thanks for all your help and information! trukman1

you'd probably be looking at a 3" to 3.5" backspacing... standard is usually in the 4, 4.5 range... "rollerskates" as i call em ;) are like 1" probably...

Backspacing is the measure from the back of the wheel to the WMS. Always positive.

Offset is the measure from the center of the wheel to the WMS. Positive or negative depending on what side of the center it is on.

WOW! Outstanding! Thanks guys! I finally understand it.

kennyw, Thanks for the diagrams. I'm going to save those.

ryoken, I think your right, I like the 3-3.5" backspacing the best. Shows more rim but not the "rollerskate" look.

I hope others have gotten as much from this as I have. I learned a lot. Thanks again!

Now, in this case, I'm not sure if we are dealing with offset, backspace, or both......
