Can we talk about some Cummins vs 6.0 questions?

This was my calculations....with the 454/T400/4.10's combo in my 76CC avg 6.0mpg @ 60-65mph.
The 6.0/4L80/3.73's in my 99 give me 7.5 mpg over the trip to Moab and back towing the same load in Drive @ 70mph

:D well it sounded good on paper....really what set me off was the fact that the payoff should be within 5 years or less....warmed up 454 ring and bearing rebuild of the short block, along with cam, intake, headwork, valves, springs and headers was looking like 2-2500...OD 4L80E in the truck, another grand, so about $3500 to make it power worthy of towing the 18K. Now that should have been the end of it, but with more power, who knows where the mileage would have ended up from the present 6...so figuring a solid 6...2800mi/yr avg ÷ 6mpg x 3.75/gal = 1750/yr in fuel costs x 5 years = $8750.
Cummins @ 10mpg (from what I read this should be the minimum with the provided 98Dodge's drivetrain) x 4.00/gal...1120/yr x 5 years = $5600, so the difference of $3250 is about the same of what it would cost me to rebuild/update the current drivetrain, and of course I would still be wanting FAST after having installing it on the Maiden...another 3K right there. But without the FAST, the total cost of the 454/4L80e combo and fuel for 5 years is about $12250
The Cummins swap and 47RH trans is $3600 up front (including fuel to get it home) - say 750 for recoup of parts sold/and scrap of the leftovers, so $2850...now I know a bunch of little crap comes up, one of which isn't so little with an in bed fuel tank of 75 gal or so, lets say $750 for that stuff, but in reality it will be $1500 cuz you have to double everything and take twice as long as your best estimate, so now we're at $4350 to get that drivetrain in the truck, + the $5600 in fuel costs will put it at $9950 for 5 years of upgrades and fuel cost. Leaving a difference of $2300 in favor of the Cummins swap.
Any better ways to talk myself into this now?

See for you, it makes perfect sense to do Cummins. My scenario will amount to me pulling a car or truck maybe once a year and up to 250 miles. But I will probably be right around the 2500-3000 miles a year. For me, it would ll be fairly light towing, camping, hunting, and cruising to the river and stuff. The more I type it, the more my obvious choice is the 6.0.

Just did the math.

6.0

Cost $3500
3000 miles a year/12mpg=250 gallons of gas
250 gallons x$3.00 a gallon =$750 a year in gas.

Cummins
Cost $5500
3000 miles a year/18mpg=166 gallons of diesel.
166 gallons x $3.30 a gallon = $550 a year in diesel.

Therefore, it would take me 10 years to justify the extra cost.

right, towing is my main purpose for my CC...and my trailer is heavy...prob 10-12K....the 6.0 and 454 did it, but not as easily or efficiently as what I hear and read the 6BTA will.
I am keeping a good tab on my cost to do this so we'll see what the end result is. I gotta say the 6.0 I thought did a pretty good job of pulling that load to Moab and back....the big issue was elevation and lack of forced air!
Coming home from NC with that 98Dodge on the trailer (8500lbs) I avg'd 9.2....pretty happy with that trip, and pulling my camper (7000lbs) gets me about the same.

work is 2 miles... :dunno: I come home for lunch every day.. :dunno: that's 8 miles a day.. :dunno: I put like 7000 a yr on Mutt... :dunno:

BUT I STILL WANT A 6BT IN IT... :haha:

Just picked up a 2500 HD with a 6.0

I would have gone the diesel route but I found a great looking truck with good mileage.

Pros
I don't tow a lot but i know I could when the time comes. It is a very smooth ride and the road noise is down.

cons
12 mpg every where I go.

in all honesty I would go 6.0 again as the demand for anything diesel is through the roof. the same package with a diesel in it would have cost double I'm sure.

you could make some cheap or free changes to that 6.0 to get better mileage. An actual tune would help it a bit. find someone with HP tuners and have them mess with the shift points and lean the mixture out some and advance the timing at cruise, think lean burn at low throttle inputs. I know guys with 700hp s/c vettes getting 28mpg doing the speed limit.. No reason you should be able to get around 14-15 with this.

Not quite worthtthe money behind the 6.0.

I disagree!

Factory autos are LAZY. By the time you put the money into building one you could have an NV4500, matching t-case, and a clutch.

I guess I just see it as less necessary behind the 6.0. They may be lazy, but I'm not building a performance truck and won't tow enough to make the auto struggle.

Please explain how a newer 6 spd auto is lazy?? set the shift points how you want and go... you can do that with a 4l60/4l80...

Since when can you set any sort of shift points without a tuner?

Here's a thought, why don't you two who are both pretty set in your ways, try to convince the otherthat their way is better? surely one of you will win. Ready? Go! :D

I drive a manual everyday, I like rowing gears but the latest generation of auto transmissions shift better more accurately and have lockup so that mitigates the fuel Eco savings, the only argument left it simplicity.

Sorry about the hijacking. You may proceed

Sall good. The suggestion is fine. When it becomes a hopeless argument it becomes silly. We have all seen the threads like "how to get more mpg from my 454" turn into an argument between two or more people about why the only sensible option is a Cummins, and everyone else in the thread is like,
