Hey guys!

I've got an 86 6.2L diesel in my offroad truck. It has always run well, and gets reasonably good fuel economy (not as good as my turbo 6.2L by a long shot), but has always smoked big time on cold starts, or when I am crawling around off-road.

My guess was a combination of injectors and a sloppy timing chain. I went ahead and tackled the timing chain this weekend, and was sorely dissapointed with the results. The old chain was most definitely WAY out of spec, and the teeth on the gears were majorly worn. I figured I'd get it together, and have the engine start to rattle more like my turbocharged 6.2L does. Put it together, and I am greeted with worse smoking than I had before, and no better rattling. Worse than that, it is surging a bit when it is still cold. I've tried both advancing and retarding the injection timing and haven't noticed much of a difference in rattle or smoke.

I've got a new set of injectors on hand, but I am concerned that maybe my injection pump is on it's way out. My turbo engine starts way better, and the smoke clears up within 30 seconds while my other diesel smokes indefinitely.

I've posted a clip of the engine running on youtube. As you can see, it still smokes soley out of the driver's side pipe, the pass side burns clean.

Not sure what happened to the audio there, but if it was working you'd be able to tell that it sounds more like a poorly running gasoline engine than a diesel :doah:

Any thoughts? Hopefully doing the injectors tonight should help a bit...

Well, I did manage to get it to rattle WAY better. I had the timing too advanced, it actually rattles the loudest a hair to the left of the line. The smoking is way down, but not fixed by any means, and it still has a bit of a stumble to it at all times, I'm guessing at least one pooched injector. Never got around to putting the rebuilt injectors in, thats up for tomorrow night.

don't know if it will help you, but i've got another thread on smokey starts in the diesel section - might give it a read thru.

Yeah, I did read it through!

I wound up putting the new injectors in tonight, and learned a bit more about my troubles. Winds up 99% of the smoke I am seeing is coming from cylinder number 3. If I crack that injector open while the engine is running, it big time clears up.

Other thing I learned is that while I thought it was starting to rattle a bit with the two timing marks lined up, it definitely wasn't. I tried playing with the timing a bit more, and found that if I advance the timing as far as I possibly can mechanically (about 5 mm to the right of the timing case line), and power up the electric advance then it just starts to produce a bit of rattle, and the smoke goes away entirely.

Also, the engine has always smoked a lot of black when the engine is under relatively little load, and gets very heavy if you put any kind of load on it. Still did so with the new injectors, so I turned the fuel down a bit. As soon as I did so, the idle / part throttle power majorly suffered, and it still smoked heavily. I turned it back up, and got my idle / part throttle back, but left me with the feeling that prehaps my IP is just about finished. Gotta big time advance the injection timing, and it puts in way too much fuel in the top end, not to mention the smoking problem...

I'm thinking I may wind up replacing it sooner than later, but I am not excited about the prospect of dropping hundreds of dollars on this engine... I still want to complete a compression check with a more accurate gauge, and perform a leakdown test to see if it is leaking oil into cylinder 3 or not before I drop the cash on a rebuilt injection pump.

i found that i had to have my timing rather advanced from the marks on the timing cover too. :dunno:

Price of a new carb, cheaper than a new truck payment...suck it up princess. :D

Holy crap, seriously thats ALL........just buy a new one. You guys get off EASY. the hotrod injection pump and fass transfer pump for that sold dodge of mine was $2750 all said and done. I did all the r&r. so thats just parts no labor.

Ouch! Guess it does pale in comparison eh?

I was all gung-ho to get a new IP for it till I wound up with these new truck payments :P I'm going to try and sell the 86 just the way it is now. The smoking isn't that bad with how it is set right now, power is pretty good too.

Yup, I got a rebuilt IP and 8 rebuilt injectors for $347 a few years back. Same cost as a new carb for a gasser...

CTD's are cool, but out of my league as far as the coin required.

well to be fair......hot rodding then breaking is the costly part of that. stock mild CTD...... cake. less breaky less costy.
