I got this 14bolt for free but it has no tags/casting marks that I can find. Has anyone ever seen a 14blt FF like this before? The extra ribbing makes me wonder what it came outa. Thanks for looking!

That is a 1988-newer 14ff. It uses a larger inner pinion bearing than the 1987-earlier and the housing is stronger.

Sweet man! I'm hoping its got some good gears and a locker/posi Thanks for the help! I just starting to learn about 4x4's again - My first straight axle

as mentioned above it should be a newer style 14bolt. I believe the ones with the "ribs" like yours were out of the HD's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

pulled one from a 90 4x4 subruban
seen them in subs mostly, either 3/4+ ton, or 4x4s, tbi years

someone once said the housing is "weaker" than the older 14b's, cast or something, dunno

It's the same as the one in my 88 crew cab... Fins and all...

I heard they are stronger...

But, how many people break a 14b???

I have a friend who exploded a carrier and another who broke an axleshaft.

from what i've read about 14 bolts is the older style used a better quality and more durable material in thier housings so they didn't need the extra ribbing. the newer style uses a cheaper metal and therefore needs the extra support ribs. correct me if i'm wrong. they probably have about the same strength, but it doesn't matter because 14bff's are generally overkill for most people.
