Ive had my 90 K5 for about 6 months and im just starting to build it up. Its a DD but as im a Search and Rescue officer it needs to be able to go just about anywhere. Its got a TBI 350 700R4 241 and 10 bolts front and rear with 3.08 gears and 285/75R 16 MT tires. Im debating about going to 4.10 gears with powertrax lockers front and rear but im not sure about the powertrax. Im also thinking about building a 383 or going all out on a 350 to replace the one i have in now as mine gives a good puff of blue smoke on start up. Its got around 124,000 miles on it i think. Im also looking for options with the 700R4, the owner befor me was towing a bit with it and burnt the ATF a bit so im thinking about getting a replacement ready for it when the time comes. Im thinking the gears and lockers are the best place to start.

I'd say go with 4.10's and a Detroit Locker in the rear. In order to regear they'd have to take the diff all apart anyway so there's no advantage to a lunchbox locker like a Powertraxx Lock Right or NoSlip. A full carrier replacement locker like the Detroit fixes the 30 spline 10 bolt's weak carrier issue.

I wouldn't put an automatic locker in the front. Make on road 4x4 driving a handful. Bet you guys do plenty of that in the winter. The difference in just having a rear locker is amazing so I'd bet you can go anywhere that isn't straight up rock crawling with that setup.

Can always get the 700R4 beefed up. Definitely need it if you go the 383 route. Lots of discussions on here about doing this.
