I'd get an older Toyota before I got an S-10 ... The ones I saw were junk ... my friends spent more time fixing them than driving them.

Ranger/Mazda B-series for US made, Toyota or maybe Nissan for foreign made. Some of the older pre-Ford Mazda, Mistubishi/Dodge, Isuzu, etc trucks were little work horses too.

I'm thinking about the small truck route but my top idea would be jetta tdi 5 speed. Decisions decisions
Be nice if we had the little turbo diesel pickups like the rest of the world. 4x4 Toyota Hilux that gets 30+mpg? I'd rock it.
I had been driving a 95 S10 2.2L 5 speed 2wd single cab short bed with a tonnoe cover. I "used" to get 28mpg but since i drive hard i get about 24-25mpg. When I say I drive hard I mean you will be surprised how much rubber a little 4cyl can burn. Other than blowing a transmission and new rear tires (the results of driving it like an ass) and a new exhaust I haven not had a single problem with it. I put over 30K miles on it too and now has 212K total.
S10s in that configuation can be had all day long on CL for under $2k

the thing that worries me about an s10 would be starting a build thread two months later with a SAS and it spiral out of control from there
My friend has a '97 S-15 GMC that was a gift from one of his regular customers--when it needed a clutch and other minor repairs,the owner decided to get another larger full sized pickup,as the S-15 was a bit overtaxed using it for his roofing buissiness,he was always loading it to the hilt..it has a 5 speed & a 2.5 4 cylinder motor ,it goes pretty good for a small engined truck,gets at least 25 mpg and after he replaced the clutch and other parts for about 500 bucks 3-4 years ago,he hasn't had to touch it,other than oil changes and brake pads...
I will agree the S-10's aren't the easiest trucks to work on though--and many had some issues with the "fuel spider" and pressure regulators buried under the intakes on the V-6 engines..sucks putting a starter in one too...I think the 4 bangers are better than the early V-6 ones were...The Ford Rangers seemed to hold up better with a 4 banger too,and got better MPG than the 4.0 V-6's did..
