Carb Help Needed

I need to get a new carb i have a Barry Grant 525cfm road demon its ok but on inclines and delicnes, it just plain sucks. I was looking at the holly truck avenger anyone have any complaints. What would be a better cfm?
 
I voted other because if I was buying a new carb, I would get a Qjet from SMI Carburetor. They build the carburetor for your vehicle. A Stage I is $325 and a Stage II is $365. Less money than your other choices. When you order the carb you give them all of the info on your application: cam specs, motor, gearing, tire size, vehicle weight, elevation, etc... Now I haven't owned one myself, I'm just saying that's what I would do.

If I had to choose from your list, I would probably use the Holley.

Demons are awesome street carbs, but like you they didn't work for me on the trail either. I actually only had problems with inclines but not declines.

Those smi qjets are 750 cfm isnt that wasy to much for my truck?

I HAD THE 770CARB TRUCK AVENGER, I HATED IT!!
i went back to my edelbrock & installed the spring, needle & seat.
it works great.
holley needs alot of adjsuting during the winter & summer.
edelbrock their is very little adjustment & easy.

holly came out w/ 550 truck avenger. this might better suit your needs.
a 770 is to big, its meant for a strocker or big block
find a used 600 edelbock $50-75 rebuild kit $35.00 needle,spring $25.00
and u will have a nice off roading carb for $135.00 1/3 the cost of a new
670 truck avenger
 
Stock on all GM vehicles was the 750 or 800CFM (with 4 barrel carb of course) no matter what size the engine, so no, the Q-jet won't be too big.

Heck, 305 trucks were getting the 800CFM's while 400+ CID motors were getting 750's. :)
 
Go to a local dirt track and start asking around who can tune carbs quads to be specific usually you can find someone who really knows how to work magic on a quad, that way if you ever have any problems you can go back, if you can't find someone local go with the SMI quad also Barry Grant has a new carb for off road use that uses alot of the same principles as the Holly truck avenger
 
From what I have seen the Truck Avenger is a great carb. It is just difficult to tune but if it is tuned correctly you should be very happy with it.

....And ya 770 cfm is almost certainly too much carb.

Blazinzuk's got a good idea about getting stuff tuned. Most dirt track racers are low buck guys and willing to help for a couple of bucks or just a few beers.
 
Perhaps. Some engine builds I've seen performed better (power-wise anyways) with carbs that are supposedly WAY too big for the engine.

In reality most q-jets were physically limited as to how much they can flow (easily corrected) but I don't know that anyone has data as to how much. Each vehicle application seemed to have a different limitation.

You'll start to see the Q-jet bias come out on this sight due to their very good off-road performance, and it's easy to see why, with them being as common as they are.

If you keep your eyes open, a rebuildable core can be had for $5, and a rebuild kit for around $20, so if you like to do things yourself, that might be a way to go.
 
I vote for holley truck avenger if a carb is the way you are going. If you have the cash I would go efi. That being said, I had a q-jet and it worked great for moderate wheeling but with the really steep stuff it left me high and dry. Went to a 670 cfm truck avenger and works well, does take some tuning. Once dialed in my is working good on my 350 cid. BTW fuel milage is worse than with a 770 cfm Q-jet.
 
If i could start over i would get a Predator carb., they only supply as much air/fuel as the motor needs and are great for off-roading but their kinda pricey. :bow:
 
i have a truck avenger and it has developed a flat spot from idle. holley techline says some -1 carbs had this problem. i'm thinking of modifying power valve linkage to come on a little quicker. what do you guys think?
 
My freshly rebuilt Q-Jet is plenty of carb for my truck, I just can't seem to find anyone that can tune it properly. No matter where I take it or what I do, it still hesitates horribly. Other than the fierce hesitation, I haven't really had it on any serious inclines to test it's abilities. I hear they're pretty dang good on inclines for being a factory carb.
