Carbing an 89

So I guess I should get some headers, and a new cat. Shorty or long tube? and also can I put a cam in it and get away with it at smog or will I have to make it stock every two years?

long tubes or a Tri-Y... high flow cat..

thought you didn't have to worry about emissions? I wont make any suggestions pertaining to getting something thru cali inspection... the major manny's do make computer friendly cams...

I know people that'll make my truck pass smog just costs alot, if I could do it regularly it'd be a major bonus. Also I changed the fuel filter and it did help it to where i can notice a difference, thanks for that one. What will I have to do to throw a cam in it? is there anything different with a new tbi computer stuff than with a mechanical setup?

You really need to look into the headers man. A cam is the brain of the engine but it needs to breath and the stock exhaust, including the manifolds are very restrictive.

High flow cat decent sized exhaust, with some tri y headers, combine that with a cam some tbi mods and you will be surprised

If you have the cash, ditch the TBI heads, stick a cam in it, and do exhaust. If you look around you can find a decent set of CARB approved heads, used, for a couple hundred bucks. There are several cams that will pass smog, even several without an EO number - just don't mention it to the tech.

Stop this foolishness!!!

Seriously, if you want more power and pass inspection (even in Cali), don't spend a single dime on the current TBI. Save some more money and swap in a 5.3 or 6.0 (aka an LS engine) from a newer GM truck. Then leave your friend in your tire smoke.

I really don't wanna swap the motor, everythings original on the truck, the moment the motor goes out and I see an LS as an alternative then I'll buy. But I did pick up some long tubes headers for only 65(is that a good deal? im not a header guy) I'm going to go dual high flow cats with a cold air from airaid and then a tbi spacer, Will I see a noticeable difference with just more air more exhaust flow?

Well, in that case, continue with your plan.

Improving the exhaust
Vortec heads
A new computer friendly cam that will work with the heads
A new intake that will flow better and work with the heads
A throttle body from a 454tbi
And a custom chip tune

That's a recipe for more power and plenty of torque to move that truck. All that stuff needs to work together so do your research first, I have not researched any of the details of an upgrade like this. For me, I'd rather put those dollars toward an LS swap.

So after being with my dad today, His Chevy 3500 is a monster in all aspects, so I think I'll just do an exhaust and intake and I'll save my big money for my diesel later in life. I guess I'll focus on a 14 bolt before a cam
