Carriage Bolts in bed removal?

After removing the rubber body mounts I noticed the bolts are in bad shape. In the bed I see a blob of weld on the bolt so I ground that off. I thought before I go beating on the bolt from underneath to remove it I should ask if that's all I need to do

Any suggestions on how to keep or delay the new bolts from rusting away?

I just use grade 8 bolts when putting a bed back on. The coating on the bolts will outlive me.
