Just thought I'd share my method of carrying a kayak or canoe with my K5. The truck has a soft top and I use it as a weekend/camping/soccer practice rig. I like to fish out of a kayak and was looking for a way to use my Jimmy to transport my stuff to the water. During the warmer months I have a homemade hitch extender but I have to leave the back open to use it. It's just not practical or comfortable when it's cooler outside.
I bought a cheap set of ladder racks off of Amazon to use for the front rack and built the hitch attachment to support the back. I was worried about getting the boat on top but it was really pretty easy. It's built out of 2 x 3/16 that I had laying around and then the joint at the bottom is scabbed over to strengthen it. Today was my first time using the setup and I was more than pleased. It's nothing fancy but it does the job.
