Cat 3406 or Detroit series 60 into 1 ton truck.

Discuss.

And no, i have not had any alcoholic beverages this morning. Nor have i been prescribed any medications-----yet.

good luck and lots and lots of fab work . . . then figure out how to support the weight in the front end .

online info shows engine / flywheel / bell housing is over 2800lbs alone on the cat 3406 .

this is a 4-71 2stroke Detroit swap . sorry but p.b screwed the pics all up .

he used a aluminum block 4-71 engne . he did a 3" body lift and cowl induction hood to help clear the bell housing and JAKE-brake equipped head .

Ok, i AM planning on putting it up front.

i'm thinking to take the front axle out of a medium duty or even heavy duty truck, and narrow it. The stock frame should be able to take the weight.........?

you need to go look at even a med duty truck frame . way bigger than our stuff .

might be faster to start with a c-60 and drop it and get it low than try and make a c10-c30 frame hold up .

plus the c-60 stuff will be setup for the motor / trans mount styles and higher floor to clear the trans / bell housing area .

I've tossed the idea around of putting a crew cab long bed body on a C60 frame, with a 3406 and a 13 with some big divorced transfer case, on Rockwells and maybe four corner air ride, with 22.5's and aggressive drive tires on all four corners.

Probably not feasible, but pretty phuckin' cool.

i was able to see a Cummins 5.9 up close today, and i think something this size might be more practical.

What is the Caterpillar equivalent to a Cummins 5.9 (6BT)?

Stipulations:
1) Must be 100% mechanical, non-electronic. And no HEUI B.S.
2) Must be able to buy new from Caterpillar.

There really isn't a Cat that's equivalent to a b series Cummins. The closest is a c7 and they are bigger, heavier and less powerful than a 6bt. The 3116 Cat is mechanical but is limited to about 230ish horse, the later 3126 is HEUI but can make 300ish depending on what the motor was originally. Their is always the 3208 but they seem to be getting harder to find as most were turned into yard ornaments and boat anchors.

If you really need a yellow motor you may have to piss everyone off and paint a 6bt yellow. It sure will be a lot less work and have a lot more power and repair parts when it's all said and done.

Not gonna happen. Cat doesn't make a 6bt with those stipulations. You can't buy a mechanical engineering new from anyone in North America that is equivalent to a 6bt. You can buy Reman from Cat but you will want to have a core. Also as @bigblock72 says, the mechanical engines from Cat that are equivalent in size are way down on power. You would be far ahead doing an Isuzu or FPT swap if you're stuck on mechanical and not a Cummins. If you're stuck on Cat badges for the side of your engine compartment. Good Luck is what I'll leave you with.

If you’re dead set on CAT (I work for a dealer and do love the yellow) you could try a 6.6. It’s a Perkins built engine and was not available for on highway applications, but when has that stopped anyone?
Cat does still make mechanical diesels as does Cummins but they’re for export only, no chance at getting one here in the US with our EPA

I have a friend who has a c30 with a v8 turbo cat which fits tightly in the squarebody engine bay. It’s hooked to a Allison of old sorts, I’ll see if I can get some pics.

I'm guessing that is the 3208. Decent engine and can be built with some serious pony potential. I forgot about that one as it's more of a marine application.

I am waiting on him to send me the pics as soon as I have them I’ll post them

Dump trucks used a ton of 3208’s also, and here in the Midwest a couple different tractors used them and new holland also used them in combines for awhile. I about bought a whole $1000 TR85 a couple weeks ago at auction just for the 3208
