Catalytic converter

Go to www.truckperformance.com They carry hi-po cats. The Car Sounds' one is the type I am getting. Out here in SoCal they seem to be the big one. Not to expensive, and a local favorite, so I'm getting a 3" one to replace the factory cat.

Todd78/87-Thanks for helping in the destruction of mother earth. Future generations will be greatful for it. Is a few extra horsepower worth it?

Time for me to jump into this debate. Okay, cats reduce emmision levels, correct? No denying that. What about the ill effects of the restrictive nature of the converter? Keep in mind that I'm referring to the older pellet style and not the newer honeycomb style. By restricting the flow of exhaust the engine is less efficient, lets say in the neighborhood the engine gets 1-2 mpg less than with no cat at all(or a honeycomb style). Last year I drove my truck 12,000 miles and it still has the old cat(yes I know time to get a high flow one). I get 12 mpg. That means my truck consumed around 1000 gallons of gas last year. Say I upgraded or cut it off and my truck now gets 14 mpg. Then I only consumed 857 gallons of gas with those figures. That's a difference of 143 gallons in a year! Is polluting less air worth the depletion of a soon to be scarce natural resource? 143 gal per person would amount to alot in the long run when you see how many vehicles there are in this country. Also take into mind that personal vehicles are only a small portion of the world's pollution sources. You have aircrat, boats, mass transportation vehicles, construction vehicles, factories, etc etc the list goes on. I'm just trying to weigh all odds here. When I get the money I'm going to put on a high flow cat because big brother is watching. Take that 143 figure and multiply it by the current avg rates of $1.50/gal and that's $215 a year in my pocket. haha!

Actually cats don't reduce anything, they simply change Hydrocarbons, Carbon monoxide, and Nitrogen oxides into harmless gases. Which would you rather have in the air you breathe? Its amazing what you can learn when you don't sleep through chemistry class.

dynomax headers
true duals
turbo mufflers
pipes exiting out the corespoding sides

and a front driveshaft in the way for the crossover pipe...isnt this the right way to do duals?

84k5,, don't even try to single me out.... my 78 doesn't even require cats... I don't own the 85 anymore,, One NASCAR race puts out more than my 78 will in a lifetime.

I am not trying to single you out, because I am sure there are thousands of people out there that have done the same thing. That still doesn't make it right.

What's going to kill person first, a 1 degree tempature rise over 10 years, or a mouthful of carbon monoxide?

If, in fact, the article is true, then the onus is on the government to redesign the cat's to produce something other then what is now harmful to humans and this planet.

My 89 had a pipe in place of the converter and stock exhaust when I bought it. The cat was in the back of the truck. Drove like this for about 2 months and put the cat back on noticed no difference except in sound.

I'd bet that the fuel mileage between running with cats and running without cats would be so miniscule that you couldn't measure it. If it really made 1-2 MPG difference, you can bet the automakers would be fighting with the gov't every day over it. That would be about a 10 percent improvement in mileage for most large SUV's!

I wouldn't be shocked if it did make that big of a difference. An old clogged up cat vs. no cat. Whenever I redo my exhaust, I'll give the results of my mileage increase. I don't think it's too unreasonable to expect that considering me just putting on a new breather and K&N filter upped the gas mileage 2 mpg. It'll be an interesting experiment.

Thanks for the info. AJMBLAZER. I just purchased my converter from truckperformance.com. I talked to them over the phone and they seemed very knowledgeable. I ordered the universal cat. which will need some modifications, but a guy at the local muffler shop is helping the with the install anyway so I figured I saved over $30 by getting the universal rather than the direct-fit cat. I have an aftermarket exhaust already so it will probably be just as easy to make the universal fit as the direct-fit would be. Can't beat a cat. for under $100 bucks.
