It's been a long time since I was in the C.B. game. Back in the day they used to preach that the antenna would work best if it had a large, flat, metal, surface to bounce the signal off of. I had mine mounted between the hood and fender with a spring on the mount. It worked very well. I never considered anything on the back because the top is fiberglass.
