Would the center bolt heads on my rig be vortech? If so are the rocker arms and stuff be the same as any other GM head?

the vortec heads only have 4 bolt holes on each head for the intake, if it has 6 holes for the intake, they aren't vortec heads.

big blocks maybe, but not gen 2 small blocks, they are still rectangular. And the Vortecs take the self aligning rocker type set up, and just because they are centerbolt doesn't mean they are vortec. The vortecs came in 96 up applications.

that's what I needed to know. I know I either need head work or have bad rings as I am loosing compression on 1 cylnder. If I am going to tear into it, then I want to build it the way I want. Planning on Vortech heads with a comp cam XE262H grind cam.

vortec engines are still considered gen I

mmmm I was thinking the Gen 2 started with the LT1 and centerbolt valve covers.

But I'm old.

LT1 is gen II... but vortec is gen I. Optispark and reverse flow cooling are whats real different about the gen II from the late gen I's.

The LT1 has been around since the 70's, i think you're confusing it for the LS1.

no, there is a 'new' LT1. used in b-body 94-96, camaro/firebird 93-97, vette 92-96. Called the Gen II smallblock. LS1/LS2/LS6 and the truck 4.8/5.3/6.0 are gen III.

Trucks/vans never got Gen II motors. Vans were gen I until '02 or 03.

The LT1 in reference here is the 92+ Vette/Camaro/Caprice multiport engine. Come on, you know that.

LSx engines are Gen III engines.

Digging further back in my memory... I pulled this little tidbit out of... well... the far reaches of the back of my head... the 70's engine you were referring to was actually monikered the "LT-1" while the gen II is actually "LT1"

true but....

no 94, is TBI engine, not vortec. Vortec started in 96 for v8s.

......in 96 the vortec was an option so all '96 models aren't vortec. regular tbi motor was standard, vortec was optional motor in 96...vortec was standard in 97!

I'm not sure where your info came from but everything i know of says 1996 was vortec. The last regular TBI was 1995

i know this because i have a 96 tahoe with a vortec and i also have the window sticker of said vehicle that shows the vortec as an option and also have a friend with a 96 that his dad bought new as a base model and it has a regular tbi in it

1996 - This was the last change for the Generation I engine, and continued through the end of the production run in 2003; all 1997-2003 Generation I engines were Vortec truck engines. The cylinder heads were redesigned using improved ports and combustion chambers similar to those in the Generation II LT1. This change resulted in significant power increases.

it says all 97-2003 because in 96 tbi or vortec was available
