center bolt heads

chevy put the non vortecs in base models until they depleted the motors, some '96 are regular tbi, haven't seen many tho...maybe 5, but 96 could be either motor

thats why when searching for motors i always specify 97-99 so i KNOW they are vortecs

Any chance you can take a picture of the underhood emissions sticker of your friends '96 that is TBI?

For some reason I always had it in my head that it was the other way around. I had heard that some vortecs managed to squeeze their way into a few late-year '95s....

So much for that myth.

That whole Vortec thing is convoluted, it's GM's fault. You could see Vortec valve covers as far back to 1988 on the 4.3's.

so the moral of the story is, if your not sure, get an engine from a 97 or later model truck, also ur goin to have to at least get an intake or retrofit the F.I. so why dont u try to get heads alone and rebuild ur engine with the new heads and intake, just what i would do, but maybe thats not what ur lookin for.
