i need help

I wish I could draw... I'd show you what I'm planning. I'll describe it as best I can.

Basically, imagine a fairly simply center console that goes all the way up to the dash. Before it gets there, the top angles up to nearly vertical.

That vertical section will house a modern CD/DVD player head unit with an LCD screen. It could possibly be a monitor for a media-PC / Carputer.

I'm planning to install some street rod style heat and A/C which would give me electric controls instead of the old cable and vacuum line setup. Those controls would also be there.

Two things: 1) the factory placement of the transfer case shifter would no longer work. I'd be switching to a cable shifter and relocating it. 2) this console will essentially meet up with the dash, so the ashtray will no longer be accessible.

sounds pretty cool. what are going to make it out of?

I'm debating how I want it made.

I'm thinking that for the angled area where the electronics will go, that panel will be mounted on rack rails...the same way large computer servers are mounted in a rack. That way if I need to change the configuration of the holes in there, I can just remove the one piece and replace it with a new one cut to whatever I need it to be.

Maybe use that whole method of construction. A strong, rigid metal frame with thinner metal sides bolted on.

i am thinking about using a center console from a 2007 silverado in my 73 crewcab. key is finding one cheap enough since i dont want to spend a grip only to have it not work out.

Interesting. How would one make a cable shifter work for the t case?

yeah, I've thought about something similar when I redo mine, full console up under the dash.. but the tunnel will be nothing like stock so I need to see how it's all gonna work out.. I'm thinking of running the cable shifter in pretty much the stockish position, just mounted in the console, with the Art Carr.. basically like 4, 5"s higher than stock... I'm only twinsticking mine...

Right now I don't even have plans to twin-stick mine... The standard setup works for my needs. I may end up using the cable with a custom shifter. I'm thinking the side of the console on the driver's side could have a "bump-in" with a recessed shifter.

Hard to describe without any drawing abilities...but I can picture it in my head.

I can see it....

I'd love to do some sort of fancy LCD screen, I'll have to leave a spot for that, even if I can't afford to do it right away.. The front upward part will definitely house my CB and another secret idea I have...

I'll more than likely do mine in the composite, seems to be a prevalent theme in my build... :wink1:

I actually did start doodling an overhead console the other day at lunch...

Overheads are definitely cool, and very useful when done right. I haven't committed to the idea yet, because I'm toying with the idea of putting in a removable sunroof for pseudo-full-vert driving...

Either way, yes... 7" or bigger LCD, and heat and A/C controls under that, similar to newer cars.

Of course, the reason I was inspired to do all that was because a certain someone came up with a cool product to use more of the dash for actual gauges...

Wonder who that could be??? :D

No worries, and no rush. That's further down the line on my list of priorities. Right now #1 is getting back on the road, and rust repair. Once some of that is out of the way, then I can focus my attention on "pimping my ride"... :haha:

Plus, I have to come up with the funds for not only the dash panel, but also all the gauges to fill it, then plan the project appropriately and knock it all out in one weekend. It'll be a few months before I can even think about it.

Purchased a console from e-bay. modifying it to fit extended slightly into the rear seat area to facilitate use of cupholders for those pasengers. While at it, filled tith spray in foam to deaden sound.
While I had no console this weekend, I sat a small flat-top ice chest there. Tempted to leave it, except hard to go anywhere and not a beer.

I started getting the finalized design for mine drawn up. Going to be pretty sweet, but I am not giving away the details yet.

Just a teaser:

Clamshell design!!! Solid Steel contruction!!!

Work begins Friday, and should have it ready for sheet metal by Monday.
