so i got a buddy at work that needs the fuel pump in his 98 chevy longbox 1/2ton 4wd how big of a pita is this? it is a gas motor if that makes any difference. any tips or suggestions are welcome

The fuel tank has to come out but it's fairly easy to do. Hopefully the tank isn't too full. The fuel pump assembly is kind of expensive, like $300ish or more plus you'll need to change the fuel filter (likely the cause of the pump failure).

One bolt on rear fuel tank strap, 4 nuts on front tank bracket on outside of frame, unbolt rear driveshaft from rear diff, loosen hose clamps on fuel filler and vent hoses, unbolt tank electrical connector/ground wire and it's ready to come out. You'll need a special tool to remove the fuel lines from the pump but is readily available at most part stores. Make sure to only use a Delphi pump assembly or you'll be doing it again soon if the part isn't DOA.

Another method.. sometimes more prep can cause less stress.

Sounds crazy and time consuming but it is easier. remove the bed. Mark the position of the bolts, bust them loose "hope you are not dealing with rust!!!!"

disconnect the tail light wiring careful not to brake the plastic clip

disconnect the vent and fill tube

Have a couple buddies help you move the bed half way off, use a saw horse or whatever to hold up the back end.

I agree with supersize. If rust is not a problem remove the bed. The bed bolts the fuel filler and ground wire at the filler. Also the rear tail lamp harness. A trailer hitch can get in the way but it is still faster than dropping the tank.
