I need to change the govenor on my 700r4. This will be a dumb question but.... How do i do this and where is it at?

Drivers side rear of transmission. Large round stamped steel "cap". Remove cap, governor is right underneath it, pull out.

If there is a reason you need to change it, might want to post up, you can modify them if the shift points are wrong, and the gear on the end is replaceable, so changing the whole thing shouldn't really be necessary.

get ready to move too because ATF will be right behind it when the cap comes off...how do I know this dont ask:doah:

I need to change it because it was a 6.2 diesel and i installed a 350 so now need to put gas govenor in in place of the diesel one

You can actually make those mods yourself.

Governor flyweights act off of centrifugal force, I believe there are kits out there that contain various weights/springs that you interchange to make it just the way you like, (like a vacuum advance setup, just different application) you can also add/remove material to/from the flyweights.

I suspect even buying a kit would be cheaper than a whole governor, although I haven't priced one.

It's easier than changing the filter.

Also, if you want to mod the shift points later, you can change the weights on the end of it. The lighter the weights, the higher the shift points.

Isn't it the other way around? Heavier weights take more speed to swing out, which moves the valve...

So is the governor the same between a 700r4 & TH350? I'm faced with the same problem of a gasser 700 going behind a 6.5 Diesel.

Nope. Heavier weights take less speed to swing out. It's a balance between the springs and the centrifugal force on the weights. When the weights are out, it's time to shift.

My Camaro governor has no weights attached to the swing-out frame. The shift points went up a lot when I swapped it in.
