The Jimmy has been sitting for a while and I have recently been doing some maintenance and upgrades (hydro assist, tierod, ps pump). I wanted to give it a new look so I gave it a new color, OD green using spray paint. I'm going to paint the cage black and touch up the wheels. It actually turned out better than I expected. I used Krylon(Italian Olive) with the adjustable nozzle. As you can see the body is pretty rough, so I didn't want to spend a lot on paint.

I'd say that look awesome!!!! I love it. I need to paint mine. It would take a hundred cans though!

Yeah, I don't think I would want to do a suburban. Mine's missing a lot of sheet metal. Only took 5 cans with about 3 light coats.

Looks good to me! Paint can do wonders with a little elbow grease before you go to town on it.

HVLP and a Qt or two.... :waytogo:

This is the way to go. I sprayed my dodge with a harbor freight spray gun and rustoleum paint.... no joke. :D

Turned this...

A spray gun overall is waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy easier and cheaper if you already have a decent compressor. A Burb takes exactly half a gallon or so if you paint it exactly 7 times. I cleared mine about 4 times and used a quart.

BTW, I used Rustoleom custom mixed at a hardware store. Worked fine, and I have 50$ in my paint including clear. And it looks better than most trucks around here. And did it in my yard during the summer with 2 days of nothing better to do.

NEVER USE RUSTO FLAT BLACK!!!!!!

When it dries, you can draw on it with your finger!
It shows everything... I HATED it...... :doah:

It looks like this, for about ten seconds, after you wash it.
It's annoying.

I used a Wagner power sprayer and smoke gray Rusto.

From this (it was worse than the pic leads you to believe)...

Yep, I sure wished I had straight metal on my truck. I would have done the Rustoleum sprayed with a HPLV gun.

Man, that did turn out nice for a Wagner power sprayer. Looks great!

Mine is a cheap paint job too. Believe it or not, this is a $138 (and a few cases of beer) paint job in 1998. When I lived in Detroit I had a work buddy that had a buddy that ran a little body shop in a barn outside of Grand Rapids, MI. We drove from Detroit to GR on Friday afternoon and drove it back Sunday afternoon wearing fresh paint. I think we may have done some liver damage to ourselves that weekend too. It turned out pretty nice for a couple drunks performing a weekend paint job :haha:

Outside of one small dent in the tail gate it was an easy paint job as the truck is native CO truck with no rust and there was no other body work that needed to be done. The bottoms were already Rhino’d so all we had to do was the easy flat surfaces and the new color was close enough to the old where the jambs did not need to be sprayed. All I had to buy was the base coat and a few rolls of DA paper as we were able to use up some left over primer, sealer and clear coat from my buddies buddy.

Fresh out of the both in 1998. The paint color is actually a 1998 Pontiac Montana minivan Quasar blue. I picked the paint color out of a Pontiac brochure from work :haha:

Same paint job still on it 15 years later. Just a lot of clay baring and polishing after ever desert run to keep it up. Being garaged all the years has helped too. I'll say this though, for a POS minivan color, it does a great job of hiding desert pin striping until you get up real close. The water skipper that landed in tailgate paint 15 years is still there too. :haha: The paint looks dark at night and really bright in the snow. Perfect chameleon color

Man, I love this freakin truck! Absolutely beautiful! I'm jealous every time I see it on here. I was just reading your thread on your desert trip the other day.:waytogo:

What is this "straight metal" you speak of? :dunno:

There wasn't a single straight panel on that whole truck, one of the reasons I bought it for trail use. Plus I picked that solid gray color to hide a lot. With that said, I wouldn't paint anything other than a trail truck with Rusto again. And, in hindsight, I miss the tan/brown combo.

I will also 2nd that Larrys truck is quite nice.

Your truck is a lot straighter than mine is. When I first got the truck the body didnt have a dent in it. I now wish I would have just restored the truck to original, but what fun is that? Its now a twisted piece of metal, but sure is fun to ride in and is a lot more capable that it was in stock form.
