I have to cut up a k20 frame small enough to fit in my dumpster at work. Probably gonna cut it in 4 lengths so I can easily handle them myself.

So I have 3 tools to chose from:
Sawzall probably take 2 maybe 3 blades.
Torch
plasma

My guess is the plasma is the cheapest and the sawzall would be the most expensive.

What do ya'll think? :D

if its not too thick, i'd say plasma. or torch.
Also, why are you tossing a k20 frame?

I just bought it for parts and sold enough parts off it to make my $$ back and then some:DAlso I don't have a title for it and I will be cutting the frame behind the steering box to weld over my k30 for a diy frame repair kit:D

Why would you toss it in a dumpster? Drop it off at a scrap steel place where it belongs and you'll even get a few bucks for it. steel doesn't belong in a landfill, and long chunks like that are murder on the truck picking it up.

From what I'm told locally recyclers won't take it without a title.
Yes I should consider the garbage truck and now wonder what would happen when they try to compact there load.

Cheapest way would be a hack saw, couple of blades, and about a week of hell.

If you include time involved, I would just go for the cutting torch (that is - if you are good with a torch, because you could waste a lot of gas if you are not...)

The sawzall would just be more effort than I would want to put into it, and the plasma seems nice, but I burn up too many consumables when cutting up dirty/greasy/rusty metal like an old frame.

Also, if you call the scrapyards, you might be suprised. ONe time I had to dump an entire Scout. No title. No papers. Second place I called I said, "don't thinnk it's in the DMV's system anymore... been sitting forever."
They took it. Don't remember if I got paid for it or not...

Just cut the #s off it, cut into a couple sections, and drop it off. You could make a couple bucks for beer.

Exactly.

scrap steel does not belong in a landfill. recycle it.

I know there are some places down there that would take it without a title. I know poeple who have done it, If you have too I would just cut the frame in half mabey 2 halves. Then its just scrap steel.

Anyway sawzall would be my choice

check you local scrapyards....here they require a title only for the body. any metal not attached to the occupant structure is considered scrap worthy.

And torch would be my first choice, as I don't have a plasma cutter.

I cut up an entire suburban with a torch. Took one day about 8 hours. Was gutted the day before, no interior no drive train in it either.

I don't even know why this is a question, fire up the plasma and chop it in half. Done deal and it should only take a minute.

Like everyone has been saying though take it in for scrap, not in the trash.

I've done VW's with a sawzall and a dumpster, just make sure you get the numbers off the frame. If you really don't care, just cut the numbers off the frame and dump it. You pay your taxes for such things :D

Make sure the fuel lines are empty and dry before you torch the frame, been there, done that. :o

Sawzall is going to be the easiest, cheapest, and with the least amount of mess to clean up.

If you go through more than one blade you are doing something wrong. I have been using the same blade a long time now to cut wood, steel, plastic and it is still sharp and cuts like butter. :deal:

What kind of blade are you using? Just curious.

Theres NO WAY you could cut up a truck faster then a torch with a sawzall. That I would bet on. Not diggin at'cha Scott, just sayin. Hot knife or plasma is king for such a job. I did use a sawzall to cut thru the double walled roof cause of any possible insolation I didn't want to catch on fire. Other then that we used the torch for the entire job.
