Check my gear contact pattern please *UPDATED*

- I will recheck the torque on the ring gear bolts.

- I did not use the original carrier bearings. I have one new bearing on the side with the master shim, and a setup bearing made from a die grinder (it was a new bearing before that . I coould not get the old ones off without breaking them)

- Yes, I am fully torquing the bearing caps on before checking the pattern and/or BL measurements

- I am not the original owner of the axle, but from what I can tell, the yoke looks good (a little dirty, but no damage or siezed bearing caps)

- Since I am not changing the gears, just the carrier, I was hoping I would not have to set the pinion also. I did buy new gears before I even came across the axle, so I do have brand new spicer 4.56 and master install kit if needed.

I will post up what I find on friday morning.
Thanks for all the help guys...

Using the original prudction shims wll proably not work. If that is what you are saying.

No, Im sorry, I should have said that differently. The shims and the bearings are all new. Timken bearings and precision? brand shims.

OK, I cleaned everything, removed the gear, cleaned it, heated it in the oven, slipped it on the carrier, and tightened each bolt to spec (130 ft-lb)making a star pattern. Checked all bearings and shims. Still seem to have a problem. It feels harder to spin in certain areas then it does in others. Heres the pattern, while under a slight drag and the compound is mixed with a bit of oil...

Something is not true! Whether it be the carrier or gears or something else, hard to say.

Agreed. Can you install the ring gear back on the original carrier with the set-up berings and then run another pattern? That could get you closer to solving this problem.

I know this is a bit of an obviouse question, but you did tighten the pinion nut to give you correct preload (without a crush washer) whilst you were taking these patterns didn't you?

woah, that is a trippy pattern, something is definately not right there. Maybe take the ring gear off and spin it around and re-torque it.

Kind of after the fact, but anytime you use a previously run ring and pinion, you need to index or mark the teeth before you disassemble so the ring and pinion can be reinstalled in its original run in position. It doesn't matter on a new set.

doesnt really matter on hunting gear sets, they are not timed.

i would get yourself a dial indicator and check the radial and axial runout on the ring gear. if that comes out ok, then you have pinon bearing problems, but i'll bet your ring gear and/or carrier are not true.
