Cherry's build thread, DD gone wheeler.

Should be turn out pretty sweet. Does full hydro react alot differently than standard steering (quicker/slower)?

Took a trip[ to hidden falls yesterday, never did get the full hydro on, just been way too busy. And i was having major carb issues, so it was flooding out baddd. But i still had fun.

Well my setup will be 3.5 turns one direction and 2.6 the other. And im not sure if this orbitrol is load reactive or not, so i dont know if there will be road feel. Either way, there will be infinitely less slop in my steering than what i have now.

Fun day. I like this pic of you goin at it with that ledge.

Hopefully i'm rocking tbi soon!
Im giving up on ever getting the 5.3 in my truck. So Wayne is going to help me out and im going to tbi my truck. i'll probably do all the sensors and harness, then take it to his place one afternoon and set up the pcm.

We'll go out again and i'll show you how to have some fun, dont forget most of the trails have a bypass for the bigger obstacles, so you dont HAVE to try cool things.

And does not return to center, thats why it is not street legal. I do drive my truck on the street every now and then so thats why I went hydro assist. To each their own

Depends on the valve, a load reactive valve WILL return to center.

The full hydro is done. It actually drives really nice! Mine really doesnt even have the best geometry and it still drives great, it was a little notchy until i bled it a couple more times. But i'm satisfied.

Funny thing, it drives better on the highway than it does on surface streets. :dunno:

set up looks good, can you give details on which orbital and and ram you used and the cost?

The orbitrol came from Kert at diy4x, it was off a massey ferguson combine. i've searched all the numbers on it and found no information, i have concluded its around 7ci and is an open center. The ram came from a forklift we had at our yard, it was the ram used to move the forks side-to-side, i put new seals in it and it works flawlessly. Its 2.5" bore x 8" stroke x 1" ram

I bought a stock high pressure line at o'reillys and had them crimp a 3/8 npt end on it to mate it to my orbitrol.

The pump came from a motorhome we had in the yard and has provisions for hydroboost, which i may do in the near future.

Valve - $75
Valve bracket - $30
Lines & fittings ~$80
Pump - Freebie
Ram - Freebie
Cooler - $30
Reservoir - $80

Total - About 295

I went with all bolt on stuff in case i ever sell the truck or swap trucks, everything except the ram tabs will un-bolt and transfer easily.
And since my pump, box, and DL ends needed replacing, and i was bound to convert it eventually, i actually saved myself some money, and improved the drivability on and off the road.

I had one of my friends dad, who has drooled over my blazer for the last 6 months, drive it this morning, and after we got back i asked how he liked the steering, he said it was different but thought thats just how the old beast drove. Afterwards i told him it was full hydraulic steering, He said he wasnt uncomfortable at all driving it.

Hmmm. Better get to work..:hack:

Got myself a full tbi setup, and the entire wiring harness.
Kind of excited, except for the making a new harness part.

And on a side note, freebie welder. I'm going to better my welding skills and then probably buy a gas setup for it. But in the mean time resin core will be just fine.

Free?? Lol awesome. Get the gas, you wont regret it after screwing with flux core. The wire is less than half the price too.

Well funny thing actually. I got the welder for free by giving up the gas setup that was on it. It was a strange arrangement.

First wheeling trip with the full hydro. SICK. i felt unstoppable! I managed to get into some situations that would have normally have me cussing, but i was able to maneuver through them.

On the other side of me is about a 5 foot drop into a boulder and a pretty good underhang. i wish i had a different angle. This was on the side of a trail. i saw this ledge and felt it was necessary to try it. =]

So you are liking the full hydro. That's awesome. But I have a question. When coming up to a turn and as you brake how OS the steering response? I only ask since I am looking at the full hydro conversion as well. I am just a little concerned about that lag time is it does happen.

I have absolutely no lag whatsoever. Fluid at 1400 psi and 2.6 gpm doesn't exactly lag.

My stock steering was scarier to drive than my full hydro. Loads of bumpsteer, slop everywhere. I feel much more confident now.

Edit: in my buddies words "full hydro made your your truck as tight as a bmw"
