ck5 2012 eureka alaska trip dates

Haha, not quite crazy enough to be barred from the 'states. Just crazy enough to think that sounds like a riot. I've got most met now, and those that I don't are already in the works. Admittedly I'm not entirely sure where Eureka is, as my time in AK amounts to nil. But I know Ancorage is about 3100 km (2000 Miles) which is reasonable for a little wheeling :D

Well Eureka is about a 100 or so miles closer to you then Anchorage!!

As for the requirements, we are flexible to a certain degree on tire size , the main thing we look for is reliability and spare parts!!

I'm in! Do you guys know of any shipping companies that'll transport my truck up your way? I don't have enough vacation to drive the 6000km both ways, but can fly in/out from McMurray.

Well its to big to go on a Auto transporter so you'd have to flatbed it. I don't know off any companys off hand But I will ask around.

You said mud tires....I have 39.5 PB Rockers. Would those cut it? I am locked front n back. No winch yet though. The few times I have been in AK I loved it. Trying to talk the wife into moving. Lived in Skagway for a year. No roads in at that time. Boat plane or hike was the only way in or out. Hike not being the best option.lol. Did some military TDY time up there. Loved it. Anyway I hope to make the 2012 trip if its cool with you guys.

Heres a picture from our AK 4x4 forum about rockers. We have a lot of mud. Not always deep mud, its the slick mud going uphill/downhill that gets you.

If you have rockers, its not like were gonna tell you no you can't go :D BUT they did not perform very well for one of our club memebers so make sure you have good pull points !!!

Yeah... most of the time when its muddy, everyone is sucking. Doesn't matter if you have the mother of the god of mud tires on. Especially Eska falls...UGH.

So... Still trying to try and nail down a schedule to see if I can pull this trip off or not...

We are to be in town by the 27th, but what day will we be back? And which town does being in town mean? Eureka?

I am willing to take two weeks off work, and one of the days we are gone is Canada Day, which is a national holiday that I'd have off anyways. That means I'd be taking 52 out of 140 hours of vacation I have for the full year on the trip if it works as laid out below...

I'd be flying Eric up from Idaho Falls on June 21st or 22nd and sending him off to Whitehorse on the 24th. I'd work on Monday / Tuesday and drive down to Edmonton on the 23rd to catch a flight up to Whitehorse for that afternoon (crazy buggers send me all the way to Vancouver then up to Whitehorse, haha). I'd meet Eric there, and cross the border with him / drive the rest of the trip on the 27th.

We leave for the bush on the 29th, and I am assuming we will be back in civilization by the end of the 6th. On the 7th Eric and I leave for Canada and drive back to Whitehorse. I catch a flight on the 8th back to work

I let Eric finish the drive back to Edmonton and send him on his way home on July 12th.

Figure this schedule can work? If we are going to be out of the bush a bit later, I can take up to two more days off on the tail end of the trip to make sure things work out. If I go this route, and bank some time during the spring turnaround I should still have enough for another journey to Moab in 2012... Since the world is coming to an end in December next year, I figure I better make it a good summer!

BTW -- Looking like between the cost of flights, fuel, food and accommodations, I gotta set aside around $4000 for this one, LOL

Russel if you and Eric are for sure coming we can adjust dates and times to suit you guys

It would work pretty well for me to fly up to Whitehorse and meet Eric there on the 29th then drive into Alaska on the 30th. If we leave for the bush on the 1st and make it back to town on the 8th then Eric and I could drive to Whitehorse on the 9th, and I'll catch a flight back to Edmonton on the 10th. Drive my other truck back up to McMurray yet that afternoon to be at work for the next day.

My flights to and from Whitehorse from Edmonton is $195+tax and extras each way, Eric's flight from Salt Lake City to Edmonton is $389+tax and extras, and his flight back is $497+tax and extras.

Going to Moab and back, I averaged 13.5 mpg. The trip is 1870 miles each way, so roughly 275 gallons of fuel will be burned both ways. Assuming 5 bucks a gallon, that puts me at $1500 for fuel, $1500 for flights, and $1000 for the trip itself. Should probably add another $1000 for just in case cash too... So, 5k needs to be set aside (which won't be a problem), 52hrs vacation booked off, and one hell of an adventure...

I think things should work out just fine :D I'd say put us as a go, if Eric is in!

Dude I came up last year a couple days after my baby was born!!!!!!

It will take a little doing for sure that puts me gone for like 20 days so it will be a bit of a difficult sell, but I think I can do it.

Like I said gonna take some doing on my part.

15 days :waytogo: :haha:

So for the guy going without a rig, lots of warm clothes and a tent would be required pretty much? Im sure food and something to drink is also a biggie.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Also where should I start looking into plane tickets? Ive never flown anywhere before.

Will my 2wd F-150 with 29" street tires be OK if I just go really really fast to just skim over any obstacles?

Yeah Tent and good sleeping bag, I would buy them up here or buy them down here and mail them up here though to save money on excess baggage.

Food we can work out when you get up here,

as for flying let me know when your serious about going and I have a really good travel agent that can hook you up way cheaper then the travel sites and with less hassle.

oh its not on the list but RUBBER BOOTS are a really good idea

As a guy who went without a rig last year I think sleeping arrangements are the most important, remember you will out there for a while, get a hold of Gus or Mike and talk to them about stuff.

It does rain alot so rain gear is important.

Good shoes a way to charge the batterys in your camera and camcorder.

Like I said talk to Gus or Mike about it, since you will be flying you can't bring a ton of stuff or it will cost you a fortune. So you need to figure out who you are going to ride with and get stuff arranged with everyone up there.

Every single on of them guys is a cool guy pretty chill about stuff.

Last year I never did put on a coat of any kind, just a couple layers with a hoodie on stayed pretty warm. Never even broke out the rain gear almost did but never had too. Shorts are fine for alot of it, I don't think it got any cooler than maybe 35 or so while I was there.

If it has to be dark when you sleep you should probably get something to cover your eyes with too
