ck5 alaska trip-july 1 2011 to july 11 2011

I sooooo wish I could have go the time off to go do that  But I spent that week waiting on back dirt "highways" for a tow truck that moced slower than molasses in January, in Fairbanks! Looks like it was a ton of fun.

It was a TON of fun, trip report will be up soon, I will start it tomorrow and keep adding to it as I have like 600 pics to go through and about 3 hours of vids.

I was so enthralled with the scenery up there I probably didn't get as many pics of the trucks as I should have but hey we were covering some ground. Also I may be bad luck cause I was riding with Dok Watson and it seemed like we were always the ones stuck

Nah, we were just too heavy... had to be pushing at least 7000lbs with all the fuel, spare 44" tire, camping stuff, and water. :haha:

Are you running the 6.2 Diesel? How did it do? I'm bouncing around a Diesel or 383 swap soon. Just the price of diesel and the cold weather keep swaying me away. That and I don't know how to work on diesels.

Yes I'm running a 6.2 diesel. If you install a block heater and keep the glow plug system in good shape you won't have cold start problems. To me, diesels are waaay easier to understand and work on. I've never felt I needed any more power, you can see it spins 42's in the mud just fine. Most of our wheeling is crawling, so I've never felt I lacked power, Its all about gear ratio. The 6.2 runs at any angle, and I've gotten as much as 19mpg driving like grandma. 10mpg if I keep the pedal on the floor all day.

Which 6.2 is it? I'm assuming it might be a M1008? What if you're some place that you can't really plug in a block heater? I'm intrigued now lol

Call me crazy but a big reason I have this truck is if SHTF (ala Zombie Apocalypse) it doesn't have anything crazy complex to have to keep it on the road. Everything is mechanical (EMP proof) and it can go almost anywhere, but Diesel keeps me swinging because you can make diesel fuel at home.

lol, my sig says M1028. A 6.2 diesel is a 6.2 diesel, the only difference is emission controlled vs. not emission controlled. A 6.2 diesel is not EMP proof, it still needs 12 volts to the injection pump to stay running. If you have power outlets, you can plug in a block heater. I have a 100ft extension cord for that. I don't usually turn it off winter wheeling, and it will stay warm enough to start for hours.

A friend of mine is a trapper up here... he carries a small generator to plug his block heater into when hes out and about.

Wouldn't 12v to the inj pump be the same as the 12v to the distributor? I never though of the generator idea. What about the fuel gelling?

I guess you could look at it that way... most people make the mistake of thinking mechanical fuel injection= EMP proof, which is not true with the 6.2 IP. Most cold states switch to grade 1 diesel blend during winter. I've never had a problem with it, coldest I've ever ran my truck was around -15.

I ran my 6.2 burb at -40 and it would start even when not plugged in you just have to cycle the glow plugs a few times

What about the fuel in the tank? I'm just trying to find what would be the most reliable, efficient and common without sacrificing power in a SHTF setting. This is going to be my Apocalypse truck when it's done. At least then I'll be in a good spot to make it to the next Alaska trip since I think that run would be a good test.

Did that Razor make the whole trip? I know you guys go miles and miles out, can it carry enough supplies and fuel for that kind of trip?

Great pics, btw!

lol, if diesel were as much of a pain as you make it sound...nobody in Alaska would drive diesel trucks.

Razor didn't go to Eureka, that was a different trail.

Diesel is the best SHTF engine imho, they will run on nearly anything.much more efficent , and longer lasting.

as for the fuel gelling in the tank we have #1 diesel up here and I've never seen it our even heard of it gelling

Good points on both. I'm assuming the 6.2 GM diesel is also pretty common I can go down to Checker or a Junkyard for parts. Wonder if they made a turbo diesel that's pretty stout. Now I have to research the conversion. :D

6.5 Turbo 93-2000 GM trucks its basically a 6.2 with a turbo and banks still makes a turbo kit for the 6.2

I noticed they're also around $2k for the kit. I bought the truck for $1400 and it still needs the D60/14BFF. In addition to the 6.2 swap now I'm wondering if it'd be better to sell it and buy a M1008. The two I've found in town are selling for $3k-$4k but have the THM400 and I like my SM465 and my long bed. I might still break ahead depending on how much the 6.2 swap would be.
