how many would like to do a wheeling trip up here and how many could bring a rig to do it?i know there would be plenty of open seats for people that cant bring a rig.
im thinking in 2010 or 2011 to give people time to prep for the trip.rig specs would need to be min 38" tire with at least 1 locker and preferably a winch.i could plan a 250-300 mile off road trip over a 7-10 day time frame in the eureka area.lots of good fishing and wheeling and also get to see some of the best sites in the country.
thoughts ideas etc?
if this is something enough people are interested in doing i can start getting this end set up.i have a pretty much fully equipted shop here at home for repairs before or after the run.

DATES ADDED-THESE ARE ON TRAIL DATES.11 DAYS TOTAL!! july 1 2011 to july 11th 2011
we will leave the parking lot the morning of july 1 at aprox 9 am .plan on a 12-14 hr day the 1st day to reach where we will have the 1st base camp.
everyone should plan on being up here 2 days before the run so you can have a day to rest and a day to get food and do any last minute repairs on the rigs.will have a rig inspection that day also to double check that all the rigs are ready to go.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

min requirements

38" mud tires-

1 locker

winch prefered-min 2 winch rigs to 1 non winch rig

gas for 300 miles off road-figure it at 4 mpg-thats what we have been averaging

tow points front and rear

recovery strap

spare or means to fix a torn sidewall

shovel

high lift

seat belts for each person riding in the rig

first aid kit

gloves for winching

tent-unless planning to sleep in your rig

basic tools and any specialty tools needed for
your rig

if open topped rig must have roll bar

cb radio

recomended items
spare parts*************LOTS
rain gear
warm clothes-can get in the 20-40s at night
flash light and batterys
tarp to cover tent

prepare for bad weather and cold temps.

heres the minumum stuff. as the trips are planned we might add more stuff.also prep the rigs for deep water crossings.if we decide to cross the mclaren river it can be 5 ft or more deep.other crossings average up to 4 ft deep in places plus the hidden holes.:haha:
the tire size could be dropped to 35 IF the rig is locked FRONT AND REAR and has a winch.but the tires would need to be a very aggressive tire-ie boggers etc.no standard mud tires and def NO ALLTERRAINS.
we have run fullsized rigs in this area on 35s and they tend to just sink in the holes.
i realize a trip like this would be the trip of a life time for a lot of you and i would want to beable to cover as much ground back there as we can with out always being stuck.
one trail we took took us 13 hrs to go 12 miles. 1st 4 miles took 9 hrs.
i do have extra sets of tires that could be used 37s and wide 35s that will fit 1/2 tons.if your running a 1/2 ton locked front you will need to bring 2 complete sets of front shafts because you not be able to climb monument in 2wd.and the idea of being chained to a rig climbing that hill is a scary thought.

as far as hunting it is open black and brown bear season in that area year round.you will need to get with fish and game to see what the out of state requirments are.most of the rivers and creeks have dolly vardon and trout and greylings in them.plus there ptarmigans if you like bird.
canada has some strick gun rules.check before you bring them-wouldnt want to lose tham at the border.if needed i can get a gun dealers info so you could send them up threw them.

Me and the gf are discussing mapping out a summer road trip that would land us in Alaska. Wanted to go all the way from NJ, north to canada, across to Alaska (idk how far in we can get by road), then down to CA and back across.

This would definitely be a 2011 idea though.

Possibly. If I come I'll definately bring a rig. Are you talkin about a straight 7 to 8 day wilderness trip or will there be towns for fuel and parts on the way. Not sure I'd want to be that far away from a tow rig. Will we be running on public roads so the rigs need to be legal like wheels covered type thing? It does sound interesting either way. I've never been north of Prince George.

The more I think, this could be a great holiday.

Hard core in the dirt mud and rivers for 7-10 days straight 50-60 miles from pavement and another 70 or so to any sort of parts or services

this year we each brought a 55 gal drum plus 2 5s and full tanks when we left the road.it would be 7-10 days straight of wheeling in the back country-no towns parts etc. you would need to carry most of the likly items to break-i carry 4 stubs 2 inners,2 sets of hubs, complete dist with wires, fuel pump, welding rod, grinders tools etc.if it was going to be a big group type of run i can pre position items and fuel-prepaid- before the run dates.if i get the claim im trying for now i will hgave it fully set up for repairs-torches-welders ,gen set etc and would base the run from there.

edit-keep in mind the 1st days run to where i would set the base camp is 60 trail miles from the road-about a 9-10 hr run for new people or about 5-6 hr run for me.i have already seen the area a few times lol

Well, unless you want to be pulled the rest of the way home, I'd think that'd be a good idea :D

Besides, even if you only get 13 mpg, you should be able to go 400 miles on a full 32 gallon tank of fuel. Being that my K5 will be diesel and just sips at the fuel off road, I'd be disappointed if I couldn't get 550 miles out of a tank of fuel. Storing a couple 5 gallon jerry cans of fuel in your truck wouldn't be a huge deal though :)

i'll be keepin this in mind but I don't think my rigs really built for this kinda thing. It's a trail rig. I only have a 16 gallon tank. I'm good for a day of hard wheeling and with the dove tail I couldn't cary enough fuel and parts.

so far the gas rigs have been averaging 3-5 mpg and the only diesel rig to go got around 10 mpg. 1 tank and a couple cans wont get you more than 2-3 days tops .i figure fuel there at a worse case of 1/2 tank per day.some days we have been on the trail for 16-18 hrs.this year 2 rigs ran out to get parts-112 miles per gps- the gas rig used 3/4 of a 40 gal tank and the diesel used 1/3-1/2 of a 40 gallon tank.they ran a total of 15 hrs on the trail that day.
i have been running up there for 5 yrs and the average is the same no matter what rig i take.the jimmy does get a bit better mileage with the 454 than with the 305.
the blazer with the 305/465/208 4.10 on 42s got worse mileage than my jimmy with 454/465/205 4.56 on 44s.
it take fuel to [push threw water and mud all day and then add the fact you are at 3500-5000 ft you not getting good mileage.

To give you an idea of what it would be like, my wife and I go in hunting every year and stay for a little over 3 weeks in this same area. We try to pack for most of the problems that we could run into. My wife's rig has 2 31 gal. tanks and she packs 5 15 gal. plastic fuel jugs. For most of the time that we are running we never see above 5 mph. We use the buggies to get from base camp to where we actually spot for game or to get water. Our mileage stays at around 3 mpg because of the slow travel. My wife's buggy is the one on the left.

So, two years to get a winch and a set of 38.5s installed... I'm already locked, so I think it is pretty doable :D Where would we be departing from?

could have the main meeting place here at my house-plenty of room for parking etc-in wasilla.aprox 90 miles from where the trail head is.

.next years trip is planned for july 3rd-12th there will be some open seats if you cant bring a rig

Me and my brother have been planning a trip up there, this sounds perfect. My rig is up to par, only issue I can think of is that I run propane.... Hmmmm, I will have to ponder how I would over come that obstacle.

I have been looking through some of the pictures from the Alaska guys trips. WOW! talk about beautiful country. so just for sheets and giggles I threw Anchorage into maps and came out with this: this is based on an average of 9mpg towing which is very hopeful, and an average of $3.20 for gas.

1 way just FUEL and TIME to get from here to there
Distance: 3392.8miles
trip duration: 4 days, 6hours, 39minutes
driving time: 62hours, 39mins
fuel cost: $1,206.44

ok so just for the sake of fun round trip
Distance: 6785.6 miles
trip duration: 8 days, 13 hours, 18minutes
driving time: 125hours, 18mins
fuel cost: $2412.88

I couldn't even begin to figure in the rest of the costs.:eek1::eek1::eek1:

So take lots of picture:D
