CL find Dana 60 I just paid 500 for it!! workin on it now, have a few Qs though!

I will have to call him again. I saw it. It wasent a big box. From what I saw, it looked like a ball with 4 nubs sticking out where the spiders go. I forget who it is on here, but a member has an avatar that looks like what I saw in that box. Thanks!

that's the regular ol' detroit locker, I run one in my 14 bolt FF

So, I'm sitting in my garage drinkin beer getting to know my new best friend, my D60! I noticed there are ne allen bolts on the kingpins. Are they unfer the kingpin caps. There are 4 bolts, but no allen bolts. I will post some pics tomorrow.

I just figured that out. I came here to edit my last post.. thanks! This axle is still part army green! I wonder where it has been, maybe a country I haven't been to or want to go to. Anyway, I want some new 35 spine stub shafts! And on and on!

lol. noob.

its a 7/8ths allen. big sucker right on top, you probably have grease in the top of the kingpin. they sell the allen key, but its expensive.
i buy all my d60 rebiuld stuff from greg at 4wdfactory.com. if you wanted you can take the housing to a truck center and they can swap the kingpins out really easy and probably cheap.

after a couple sets, they start to get more and more worth it to take it to somebody! i dont have the 600 ft/lb torque wrench like somme people.

the dana 60 is so easy. after you tear into it, you wonder why it was so intimidating.

oh, post a pic of the kingpin itself, you may get lucky and them actually be still good.

600lbs. That is stupid tight! I don't think I'm going to take them apart. I'm going to swap gears, some kind of soft locker so I can drive on the road with snow, stub shafts. Install it, and go from there. Then, if its bad, I will do the king pins. Once its in the rig, I can do some. Upgrades. There are so many upgrades I need to do, I don't want the other parts of the burb to get jelous!

Once you get the C's off and inspect the kingpins, you will likely find them to be fine (look for wear). Assuming no wear on the kingpins, just replace the nylon cups and the springs and call it good.

It should be a crime to own a D60 axle and not have a 600 ft/lb torque wrench. :D

With that said I have a torque wrench for anything I will ever need to torque. I have 6 different Snap-on torque wrenches that vary between 1/4" drive 50 in/lb dial type to the massive 3/4" drive 600 ft/lb clicker type.

Good list!

Where did you get the Detroit and 35 Spl stubs for those prices?

Highonda over on Pirate has some screaming deals on 60 rebuild parts. Go through the axle and figure out what you need though first.

I think his website is extremeaxlesales

Actually I got all the dana 60 parts except the brake parts and the gear install kit from ORD. The brake parts I got at the local parts store, and the gear install kit I got from DTS, they have mail/internet order but they happen to be a couple miles from where I work. The stubs I ordered are just spicer 35 spline stubs. Also, I think the Detroit would of been $20 cheaper if it was the 4.56 and up carrier.

If it looks like mine it's the detroit locker for the 14 bolt.

Also, the genuine Spicer Dana 60 Service/Maintenance manual(which you can find for free on their website)lists the torque for the kingpin at 500 - 600 lbs. So a torque wrench is not really necessary, that's a big range. If you have a 2 ft bar, you need to put 250 - 300 lbs of force on it, or a 3ft bar would need 167 - 200 lbs of force, etc. Also, sometimes a cheap way to get a 7/8" hex is to find a big cheap chisel and cut 2 - 3 inches off the end of it. Make sure you have full engagement of the king pin oand the socket. Mine wouldn't budge so we took it to my uncles trucking shop and used a 1" drive impact(with a 7/8" socket around the piece of chisel), they came off in 2 seconds.

With all that said, these guys are correct and have good ideas, if your king pins look real good, just put a new spring and bushing on it and be done. Or maybe a bearing and seal in the bottom too. The plastic and spring will wear a lot faster than the kingpin does.

I think, once the axle is in, I will do the kingpins. I don't have a way to secure the axle while putting that much force on it. Its on jackstands now. Thanks for all that torque info too! I'm going to purchase that giant allen wrench! Thanks again guys!

You can also use a lugnut for the allen key....they are the correct size.

Throw an old wheel stud in the center to give it some extra strength, then use a regular old 6-point socket and the largest breakerbar you own to remove it.

Or, take a cutoff wheel and "undercut" the kingpin about 1/16" above where it touches the knuckle. That will relieve all the torque on the kingpin, and you will be able to remove it with almost no effort.

Coupla tips for the D60 noob.... :waytogo:

:usaflag:

Good call on the waiting til its in. I don't recall who but somebody has a build thread here that made an attempt to chain the axle to truck, and break the kingpins loose. From what i remember the allen bit he was using snapped the hell off and his giant breaker bar made quite an impact on the shape of his door:doah:. You'll prolly luck out and find only the nylon and spring need changing, as well as the lower bearing, and race for peace of mind

how much does that torque wrench and allan adapter cost. and yes it was mtblazer89 and he put a fat dent in his door. I got fed up looking for a dana 60 in cali and just bought a whole 81 3x3 one ton drw. pricy but i finally got my d60 :) and not the money seems to be running out of my bank account for PARTS :(
