I keep hearing this clanging , crunchy sound from the cat converter area, could my cat be dieing? anyway to check it, etc.

Sounds to me like the asbestos in side (honeycomb) is busting up... Have a buddy or wife stand behind the vehicle with a trash bag... Not directly behind it but off to the side... Or you do it and have them hold the gas to the floor for a second or pat it and rev the RPMS up and see if you have an chunks of stuff in the bag... Don't hold the bag tight around the exhaust or touch the pipe...... :eek1: If so your cat is dieing... If not your cat could still be dieing..

Hmm, how long should cats last. Mine have been on my truck for about 4-5 years with less than 5,000 miles. They are the cheapo Catco Cats.

I got about 10 years and 150 000 miles from mine.
If you let it go you could loose power from it blocking exhaust, I've been told.

If your truck is a "off road truck" just smash out the insides. an leave the case. Mine rotted off on its own. the funny thing is my 350 no egr or cat passed smog flying colors. If its the heat sheild get a hose clamp and go around the cat to keep the case together. Yes I am a major hack, but this is my plow truck

if you have mufflers you will get a pluged up muffler first.

we had a problem matic vehicle at the shop few weeks ago. removed the exaust from the manifolds back. fired up no problem.

someone added a new cat after the old one but never removed it.

well it finaly decided to bust up and fall apart. then it went and pluged up the second cat and restrict the flow by almost 100%.

we fixed it with removing both cats and then adding in ( 1 ) new cat only. fixed it 100% like new.

lots of dodge trucks have the cat falling apart problem in them. seen a ton of them get replaced.

so basicly you need a new cat and prob muffler also. as i wouldnt trust it.
