Tecnically,it was illegal for the salvage yard to even SELL you anyengine part off a "clunker",I was told by one salvage yard owner that the law states "ANY part that had fluids in it (engine, radiator, tranny, rear axle, gas tank, etc" was NOT to be sold for re-use..he said only doors, fenders, bumpers, air bags and steering colums, and interior parts were about all they could sell "legally"..he also said they only had 30 days to destroy the remains of the cars that came in as "clunkers",but the feds recently granted them another 6 months,so many junkyards complaine it was an impossible chore,to strip that many cars that fast and inventory the parts..
Many of the salvage yards here have crushed ALL the older vehicles, and many wont sell trannys or engines any more,in favor of selling them as "cores" to rebuilders or exporters who ship them to Haiti or Africa..its making it difficult to find ANY parts now..after scrap hit 250 a ton here last year, most of the large junkyards now look like open fields, something I have never seen in my lifetime, after decades of the same vehicles sitting there "forever"..
