I got a distributor from a clunker at pick up part and has that glass seize on it. I cleaned it best I could but inside shaft might have residue. Was wondering how harmful it would be to my engine or if it would do anything or whats the best way to clean it. Its for a 91 5.7 chevy.

Thats nasty stuff. We blew up lots of cars at work. I wouldn't use it and take it back. That stuff was supposed to melt and bond to the metal. I would buy a new dizzy for a $100 from Autozone, etc then risk a motor getting damaged or the shaft seizing. It took some of those things 10 minuets to die with no oil.................

The guys here ordered floor sealer? It had the same chemicals but must have been stronger. Most lasted 45sec. We actually drove to the lot with no oil poured it in and sometimes before they could walk around to hold open the throttle they were already slowing. I wouldn't try and save the money on a junk yard part when a new one also has a new pick coil module cap and rotor.

take it apart and see if you can clean it up. it isnt hard to rebuild a distributor.

Tecnically,it was illegal for the salvage yard to even SELL you anyengine part off a "clunker",I was told by one salvage yard owner that the law states "ANY part that had fluids in it (engine, radiator, tranny, rear axle, gas tank, etc" was NOT to be sold for re-use..he said only doors, fenders, bumpers, air bags and steering colums, and interior parts were about all they could sell "legally"..he also said they only had 30 days to destroy the remains of the cars that came in as "clunkers",but the feds recently granted them another 6 months,so many junkyards complaine it was an impossible chore,to strip that many cars that fast and inventory the parts..

Many of the salvage yards here have crushed ALL the older vehicles, and many wont sell trannys or engines any more,in favor of selling them as "cores" to rebuilders or exporters who ship them to Haiti or Africa..its making it difficult to find ANY parts now..after scrap hit 250 a ton here last year, most of the large junkyards now look like open fields, something I have never seen in my lifetime, after decades of the same vehicles sitting there "forever"..:(
