Coil spring front suspension for my 79 GMC

Frisbee is long gone from this site.....his truck was sold off too.

I recall reading his writeups and by his own admission he didn't use a lot of "science" when he built his suspension. A lot of it was just what he thought seemed right... it always seemed to me that he'd gotten pretty lucky to have gotten something that worked so well without understanding all of the suspension theory behind it.... then again, using coilovers instead of leafs is a huge step forward. Perhaps there was more that could have been done to improve his design, but the improvement over leafs might have been dramatic enough for him not to care. :dunno:

Either way, just run it. See what happens and what you like / don't like. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't work well. You've already absorbed most of the costs associated with doing a multi-link setup (heims, springs, shocks, links). If you decide to reconfigure the setup to something non-inverted, the material costs should be minimal....you're just out some of your own time.

I would go the direction of the engine cross member for the pan mount. Not sure I like using the stock T-Case mount even boxed for the link mount. It just seems that its going to get allot of twisting force from the axle. I don't really have any good ideas on how to build a different one that would work better but I do remember that on one of the T-case mounts that I had it was tied into the top of the frame also not just bolted on the bottom.

My 73 3/4 ton had one that bolted on the top and bottom. Id like to find one of them to use, or make a bracket to bolt mine at the top.

Good advice, Greg. So you dont see any safety issues inherent to this design?

It's hard to say what is "safe" from a photo...but I'll admit the crossmember link mount doesn't look like a long-term solution to me. You might spend more time studying other setups to see how they deal with those forces and distribute the loads.

For all other brackets, I'd be gusseting them as low as possible while still allowing for necessary travel of the heim/link. I don't see much value in leaving long unboxed tab mounts, unless it's for clearance. Panhard bar mounts will see massive forces, as will the links themselves. I'd be adding as much re-inforcement as I could.

Look at the ORD site for clues....there are some great shots of Dr. Watson's front suspension and the sheer size of the mounts he used. We can all learn a lot from his examples... :waytogo:

If it weren't for the street-driven aspect of it, I'd say run it as-is....but at speeds above 3MPH (offroad) it's probably wise to address a few issues before it's maiden voyage.

Steve has been pretty busy lately building his new house himself. I will try to get him to take a look sometime and post up.

Reinforcement to the outer links

Check this out guys.
I boxed the outer link mounts and added more mounting surface.

Thanks.
I'll keep you guys posted, when I test it out.
Still waiting on the correct length drag link.:(

Test run, success.

Drag link came today!:woot:
Took it to a trail near my house and flogged it pretty good. Running up some rough trails at 40-50 MPH!
The ride is incredible! Steering input is like rack and pinion. Bumpsteer is at a minimum, only slightly noticable and warp speed over bumps and whoops.:saweet:
The difference is night and day compared to the leaf spring suspension. I will post some action shots this weekend.

Just for the record a lot of the guys on pirate dont like my rear suspension set up and said that it was unsafe and wont work. Do you see anything not working here??
