colbystephens' '73 blazer build!

It kind of has a dinosaur skeleton (vertebra) vibe to it too. :waytogo:

Dinosaurs make me think of fuel. Fuel makes me think of trucks. Nice truck sculpture :D

craig - it is free to move. the disks oscillate a little bit, but that motion is kind of nice. they don't spin, and they rarely contact one anther. the wind from people walking around moves them slightly.

BGKYK5 - lots of folks think it references some sort of spine - particularly the shadow on the floor. :)

Colby- Haven't been on the site in a while... bumper looks frickin sweet! love the winch idea, that's pretty trick. Artwork also looks great. the tree idea fits the area pretty well too I asume. One of these days I'll get up there and go wheeling with you, just need to get some moolah and free up some time for repairs

yeah, I just read your thread. I won't be a member again till next month, so I couldn't post up in your thread! :) I'd enjoy doing a trail ride with you sometime!

well, to continue my own thread hijack... :D

Does that help? :D

This piece is called Deconstruction. The basic idea is that for me the wilderness is a perfect location for introspection and personal growth. I am like the tree - constantly being dissected and constantly being sanded down as I analyze my faults and places I need to grow. Sometimes it's helpful to look back on how far I've come to remember that it is worth it to keep pressing onward - to keep putting myself through the pain of growth. The sawdust is evidence of the past. There's beauty in looking back at the process that I've been through. The tree will always have imperfections, so the idea is more about the process that happens - just like life. I'll never reach a state of perfection, but I can keep moving toward it. The roots at either end suggest that growth is neither static nor uni-directional, but rather a continual oscillating process.

That's all the conceptual stuff that I bring to it. My artist statement is much less deep for this piece. It basically says that I'm inviting the viewer to come in and analyze the imperfections of the piece and simultaneously go into a state of introspection so the viewer can grow. ;)

Funny! :D
Now, are you going to write that up in an Essay to display with the piece? Otherwise, I would have had no idea what it was about :doah:

There is a vague artist statement there. My goal is not for people to have some incredible "aha!" minute where they understand the work. I just want to create an introspective space for people to be in. If that simply means that they come in and admire the formal elements of the work, then that's enough for me. The depth of the meaning in this piece is more for me than it is for anyone else. The visual/compositional elements are more easily appreciated, and enough to carry the work conceptually.

Sorry to bump this post but I just read the whole thing and am wondering what happened? I still want to know how the rear bumper/tire carrier came out. I am about to start on mine in the next couple of weekends. Did the winch work ?

Also was anything done on the front bumper?

Thanks

Haven't done much on the Blazer of late. Got busy with school not long after the rear bumper build started. I haven't gotten beyond what you see in the pics. I'm done with school for about a month, so I should have some time now to finish it up on weekdays. Got plans for almost every weekend from here till school, though. :D

Winch works, but it doesn't have a brake pad on it. Haven't started the front bumper yet. Hoping to finish up the rear shortly and start the front and half doors. Those are my projects for weekdays between now and school starting at the end of Sept. :D

Funny! :D

Are you talking about the Blazer??

I just spent 1/2 my workday reading all 55 pages. I am impressed.
Your art is beautiful & the sculptures are cool too.

I was looking at your winter wheeling pics and Zimmer asked if that was a 6.2 in the short vid you have posted... so being that your truck is one of my favorites on this site I thought I would have a look at your build thread.

Now I like it even more than before. I like all the work you have done your self,on a budget, in spare time. I had no idea it was a diesel even more cool! :waytogo:

I really like your truck and love the colour, you and Craig realy nead a pic of your two trucks together.

:bow::bow::bow:

Thanks. :D Haven't done anything to it in quite a long time, but I'm finishing up my Bachelors degree this week so I'm hoping to get back on it shortly. :) Got a couple ideas rolling around and projects that need to be done.

Over the course of yesterday and today I have gone through this whole thread and have to say your rig is SWEET! Have you been able to do anything since the beginning of the month or is school still getting in the way? Great build thread btw.

Thanks! I feel like I haven't done a dang thing to this truck for 2 years now. I graduated a week ago, so depending on what happens with work over the next couple three months will determine how much I get to work on it. Weather is improving now too, so that makes it more possible.

First thing I'm doing to the truck when I get a good chunk of time is swapping in a hydro-clutch set up that I picked up from another CK5er. :)

I have done some winter wheeling with it, so it's not like it's just been sitting in the driveway completely untouched... :D

At this point, it's looking like we'll be moving to Reno in late July to go to grad school there. There's more CK5ers there, so I'm hoping to hook up with those folks and be able to do more/wheel more often.

wow man that thing is sweet, you have definately gotten your moneys worth out of that bender. That tire rack is sick!! And I love the herculiner, I love that stuff it works great. Congrats on graduating!

Yea Reno should be fun, better weather and more places to go, plus you can win some money at the roulette table for more improvements on the K5 :woot:

Reno is only about 5 hours from here... I'm thinking you tow your junk down to Fresno and hang out/get a good night's sleep and then go wheeling with us up in the sierras for a weekend this summer. :)
